Unpacking drives CPU crazy
Why is unpacking letting my CPU go up to like 80 sometimes?

Got a i7-8700.

Normal, don't worry about it. Just don't do alot of multitasking while unpacking. I have a good aftermarket cooler for my i5-9600K so mine sits on around 54°C while unpacking right now.

Yea tell me about it. I have a 9900K and my CPU is just off the charts. And I dont even own this game :( I think more RAM will fix it or a bigger SSD. Perhaps a better modem. Sometimes I dont know what I am typing though :(

Yeah, I'm confused by the question

Whoa... you mean your CPU needs to work to solve complex methematical compression algorithms?

Yeah, I'm confused by the question

I am just wondering why my CPU is getting that hot. normal state is like 40-60, and now where it unpacks its hitting 70-80°. I'm not that of a computer expert but yeah i think that aint good

Sounds like you've got a fairly poor CPU cooler (or it's installed wrong) if 100% usage is getting it up to 80C.

Have you ever tried stress testing the build with Intel XTU, AIDA64, RealBench or Prime95 before? Running games is not a good benchmark for determining how good your cooler is working because hardly any of them are going to put full 100% usage on all it's cores.

But Fred is right, 80C is pretty hot but not really dangerous either.

if he is this concerned about it 'going crazy' when unpacking, probably shouldnt try prime95 or he'll have a mental breakdown

Well having an 8700 and not 8700K and the lack of knowledge makes me think it's probably a pre-built and what kind of cooler is on it is also unknown.

My previous CPU did the same when unpacking rendering the computer useless until completed. That was however an old system for today's standards and I used a stock cooler.

PC's are not consoles. Steam is supposed to be able to run in the background and not to take over the system resources.

I don't know if it was some recent update but at least a few months before I could just put several games to download and I could use my computer normally during that time. I can torrent, compress files, copy files and watch videos at the same time and still use my computer normally but as soon as Steam starts downloading/decrypting it just starts eating all the resources

Maybe Valve is trying to save a few bucks in bandwidth or storage space by excessively compressing files, maybe they are afraid of pirates. I don't know what happened recently but certainly it wasn't like this a few months ago.
