Keyboard and mouse works wonderfully.
the aiming is a lot better with a mouse but other than that i dont think it really matters

for me its the keyboard and mouse (i dont like the overall controls on both options myself) but the shooting with a controller is just something as a gamer i have never been able to do good...

It has several options, you can also do manual aim while on foot and aim assist while on horse. You can also pick between partial and full aim assist if I remember correctly.
I'm 50hrs in on rockstar client and I use mouse/keyboard only.. It's the way to go.
Seriously ? Controller for PC version?
Then buy the console version.

Oh good, someone wo tried, I have a question: I'm definitely looking forward to run & gun with keyboard and mouse, but the horse riding in this game was great (on PS4 Pro) and benefitted from the analog input via gamepad sticks. Is there a way to steer the horse using mouse view or is hard-bound to WASD? And if it's the latter, did they at least find a way to not make it a kinda jerky animation when you press the buttons?

Thanks in advance. :)

(Still gotta wait around 20 hours, preloaded finished couple minutes ago ^^)

Gamepads on pc, why not? There is the excellent MS Xbox One Elite 2 controller for instance and even many premium PS4 controller (and of course the DS4 itself, modded or unmodded) work just fine on pc. The great thing about pc is that you have choices, so why limit yourself?

Plus the only console that comes near pc visuals is the Xbox One X (and still only 30fps), a hefty priced piece of hardware in its own right. If you have a good pc, it will trump Xbox One, PS4 and PS4 Pro versions of this game easily.

M+K takes some getting used to. Especially on the horse. But aiming feels so smooth and you really feel like a true gunslinger. Haven't tried controller on the PC version I had, but I found them easier to get used to, but incredibly inaccurate. Although that could have been from the input lag on console and bad visibility.
I've been switching between mouse + keyboard for on-foot gameplay and PS4 controller for horseback/wagons and fishing (fishing sucks with the keyboard).

I've also been trying it with the Steam controller some and have not yet been able to dial in a config that always works. I'm probably going to need to put in some significant work with action sets to make that all come together right.

But yeah, alternating is probably the best way to go.
I thought about switching between the two inputs, I did so in GTA IV and V, but in both of these game, shootouts during driving were rare. In RDR 2 shootouts on horseback are not that rare. So unfortunately I too will be on a quest to find that one good solution for one input, which will probably be mouse and keyboard.
Aw hell no...I prefer 100+ keys and a mouse over a controller any day. I mean, if this was Rocket League we were talking about then yeah controller would be normal.
Using a controller while playing on a PC is unatural and ls a strange choice to make while given the opportunity to the superior mouse/keyboard. The very idea should cease to exist the moment a person moves to the PC platform.

Wow, no grey areas, eh? ^^ Well, everytime a pc games does not offer a walk option (button) I do miss that analog input. Great for anything that needs gradual speed and not just a digital button press.
