It doesnt but you come across the treasure and it got marked on your map?

Oh boy please tell me you used "dead eye" at that spot to find the gold sparckle? the reason the circle goes away means the threasure is in range of you, if you do not see a chest on the floor, best is to use dead eye, you see a gold sparckle then. hate to say this but i have no idea what happens if you don't open the chest at that point.

threasure maps don't expire, i have (had now) maps in my bag for ages and even the same maps in the mail to claim still.
They don't expire. After 200 hours I still have even the first piece of the first treasure map I found. You can't even discard them xD At least you know where you were (I hope so). Search until you find it.

A treasure map is used up when you open the chest that it points to. It should stay in your possession until then, but the game will remove the treasure marker from your map when you do certain things (like start a mission), requiring you to use the map again in order to be able to find the treasure. If you've actually found the chest, then I think that the large yellow circle on the map may disappear, though the treasure marker should stay until you've opened the chest or done something to deactivate the map.

You may very well have encountered a bug. I did once have a problem where I opened a treasure chest, and the game wouldn't let me take what was in it for some reason, but because I'd opened the chest, the game discarded my map, and restarting the game didn't allow me to get the treasure. So, I lost the treasure.

yea nothing frustrated me more then open a threasure chest and upon opening the game crashes on me, ofc the opening saved, no map, no loot, thx R* great code. ^^

There are a couple of reasons the circle will disappear.

Using a different treasure map. (note, you will not lose the treasure map)
Activating an open world event. (again, you will not lose the treasure map)
Finding the treasure. It will put an exact marker on the map. once you open and loot the box the map will be gone.
Game Bug. /shrug

If you are having trouble finding a treasure at any given location...

Additional note:
You can only carry one treasure map of each location in your satchel.

This is indeed the best tool for finding any item in RDO.

Then there's this tool for animals, plants and random events:
