Problem for me is that I've finished the main story and that place is abandoned now
I do remember once during it, I had to shoot a gun out of a kid's hand, and that worked fine. Wonder if disarm doesn't work in the epilogue for some reason.
I've seen video of someone doing it in the epilogue but they're shooting at some of the people by the sheep pens in Valentine and was hoping to do it in a way that wouldn't leave me with a bounty.
Stand a way back from the entrance gates, I used a the varmint rifle with a scope, shooting the two guards arms and then one whoever else I could see with a rifle, there's a bunch of them there so hopefully you might have some luck there.
I'll try the Varmint rifle.
Everyone above is clearly thinking too plainly. This challenge was very simple and I'm surprised people didn't figure it out by now.
I probably won't get credit for this but it wouldn't hurt to help others struggling.
Things you need are;
-Snake oil
-Auto aim (I usually use free aim. This is optional but makes it easier)
-A bow and arrow (Normal arrows recommended)
Stir trouble in a town. I chose Valentine. When the lawmen and townsfolk come at you, keep an eye out for anyone with a rifle. I learnt shooting their right (left in our perspective) arm/elbow. If you do so with them facing you, you'll have high chances of disarming them. You don't need to worry about reloading and you can use Deadeye as much as necessary.
Kill anyone who has a handgun. If there's more than 3 enemies, kill multiple until you're not overwhelmed. Heal often because you'll need it. Find cover but in a way you won't be blocked when shooting. (Basically use a tree as cover before aiming etc)
Any enemies you kill with a bow, get your arrow back by walking over them. You'll need as much as possible since there's always a chance they won't be disarmed.
Good Luck.
Dead Eye auto loads the weapon - and that fails the challenge.
Find a group of enemies (Hangin' Dog Ranch is great). Position yourself where they can't get a clear shot unless they come at you - then piss 'em off.
With the Evans, or another suitable repeater with ample ammo. In free aim, without dead eye, as they come at you shoot the closest in the arm, then the next closest, and so on. 3 times and you're done. You can't reload or change weapons. Make 'em count.
This is the right approach - shoot them in the arm - with regular ammo
i've never had to switch to the varmint rifle, but that might work - just remember to do a head shot after you see them switch weapons.
I was just doing this in early Chapter 3 - right after getting the long-scoped rifle.
Dead Eye with Scope Auto-Loads, but Dead-Eye Without Scope does not Auto Load.
But this might also depend on Stage of Dead Eye that you are currently in.
The key is just to not kill the enemy in the first shot
(hitting the weapon, arm, side all seem to work - even knocking them down with the first shot, although i haven't tested shooting them in the legs).
Hanging Dog Ranch is definitely the best place for this becuz the enemies are spread out and they all seem to have rifles - lots of practice.
I stand on the outside of the fence, to the left of the gate, near where that Orchid grows in the corral. To jump things off I shoot the guy on the tower and, if necessary, the guys on the right that have a clear shot at me near the wagons, but their shots don't hurt that much.
As they come at me, they need to top a little rise in the corral to have a shot at me. As soon as I get a shoulder shot I take it, then do a head shot. It doesn't take long after that and it's over.
The Evans has an abundance of Ammo in the magazine - if you think you need more than 6. I'm not a very good shot - I usually need more than 6...lol
I mod the crap out of the game - and Automark Deadeye is the first thing to go.
In a race between Cancer and Automark Deadeye: Cancer would be my choice. It's one of the TOP 1 things I HATE about Online.
I never could complete the challenge with Deadeye level 4 - or the last one, whatever that is, 'cause that's where I start. My Deadeye goes right by all that other nonsense.
My strategy worked perfectly. I think yours might have worked had I tried it that way, but I didn't have poison arrows at the time. I was still on Chapter 2 when I did that challenge, and when I did the hunter (or survival) challenge, I found out it was possible. I think Charles mentions it, but I could be thinking of Javier and knifes.
Anyway... I recommend using my strategy if you don't have poison, and want free range of deadeye for the challenge.
Later you will look back on this challange as easy. Shooting off Hats. THATS HARD.
Heck. Finding the correct number WITH hats is not easy.
And the kicker, there is always that one SOB who flinches and causes a head shot which goes a Screws it all up. Usually the Second, but sometimes the third.
