Fishing Pole - Can't Cast?

I'm able to equip the rod and place bait on it, but I can't do anything else after that. Holding the button to cast does nothing, Arthur just stands there. I'm using mouse and keyboard, and the prompt is to hold right mouse button. That does nothing. It works fine when I want to aim a gun, so why is it not working here?

I'm supposed to be teaching Jack how to fish -- please help me. I don't want to let this tiny child down.

This is happening to me now, almost a year after the last reply. What a ridiculous bug.

I encountered this myself. I found that I was stood just close enough to the river that it let me try and fish, (rather than saying "You are too far away to cast") but not close enough to actually cast. Sort of a anti-sweet spot.

All I can suggest is try moving about a bit.

It turned out that the story mission apparently wanted me to stand in this EXACT spot, which I was not in. After that it was fine, but the game doesn't really communicate some things well. Then again, its doing so much at once that I guess I can forgive some bugs and jankyness.

Grief, really? That was the cause? I guess I got lucky and moved to the position it wanted me to be by accident.

Right in front of this random horse to Kieran's right. The weird thing is, it wasn't the horse I brought on the mission. It just spawned there... baffling bug.

YEAH ME TOO, I'm thinking about writing to support but I don't know how that might help. Anyway did you get your fishing rod from prime gaming?

I've been here in real life. If you can't catch a fish via legal means just get yourself down the pub and start telling stories. After three pints they'll believe you, after four pints they'll want to buy your bait, after five pints they'll want to fight you for it and after six pints you awake in a gutter. I'll never go fishing again.

Restarted the client and issue fixed. Not sure what happened to my fishing trip with Javier :(

Ran into the same problem when trying to fish with Javier. Glad to know I wasn't the only one with this issue.

I had this same issue. I tried all of the recommended solutions. I finally validated my game install, and it found two files that needed updating. The fishing with Jack mission then worked.

I have the exact same problem, however I've discovered, it does sometimes work when you try angle your camera a certain way.
What I generally try to do is Hold RMB, move my camera to point a certain direction (usually start with aiming at the sky) and try to cast, if it doesn't work, let go of RMB, move camera and try again. When casting i try both hold and clicking LMB.
You can also try holding both RMB and LMB and then move your camera around. but somethings this doesn't work and it doesn't let you move your camera at all when holding both buttons.
