Online, gold bars are the premium currency, so there's nothing to sell. It would be like trying to sell money. You can buy gold bars with real money or earn them in-game, and then they're spent on items just like cash is. However, while most items can be bought with either gold bars or cash (never both at the same time), some stuff can only be bought with gold bars, and ability cards and upgrades to them can only be paid for with cash.
Very little can be sold online - to the point that it looks like they are specifically trying to make it impossible to convert between cash and gold bars even indirectly - and they definitely don't provide a way to directly exchange one for the other.
