Either way, you definitely should be doing resupply missions. Paying to resupply does save you time, but it costs you cash and results in you getting less XP. It also loses you the chance to get loot, since on several resupply missions, you end up taking out enemies that either provide useful pelts or cash and items. If you have the collector role, and they drop collectibles, then you might even ultimately make more cash from looting than skipping the resupply run would have cost you. Also, the resupply run typically gives you 5 - 20 materials in addition to the supplies, meaning that you'll get more goods with less hunting.
For instance, the long distance 100/100 supply mission the owner gets ~$600 for delivering it whether or not they have help. If you help you then also get around 1200 xp and $312. Great way to make money too.
