Online, gold bars are the premium currency. They're like cash except that in addition to earning it in-game, you can buy them with real money. Most stuff can be bought with either gold bars or cash (never both together), but some items can only be bought with gold bars, and ability cards can only be bought and upgraded with cash. You also can't really convert between cash and gold. They seem to have specifically made it so that you can't sell most stuff online so that you can't do something like buy an item with gold and sell it for cash (or vice versa). And the stuff that you can sell isn't stuff that you can usually buy (e.g. herbs you pick and items you loot from bodies to sell to a fence).
