Making a pack animal, Wild horse/donkey in single player.
Just tried this with a wild horse that I tamed & got the level up just high enough for it to respond to whistles.
Then killed 2 deer and put one on both my main horse and the wild one, got the wild one to follow me back to camp and was able to donate both to the cook.

At this point it brings up a good question, can I actually keep the wild one from ever going to the stable if I never put my saddle on it?
Only asking because my game time for now is done and wont be able to test it out until the next time I can play.

Then comes the more obvious question, can I steel(borrow) a donkey and do the same?
So far, I've only seen one donkey in the game & its no longer in that location.
Needless to say, they would be a more fitting animal for this task
(assuming it can even be made a permanent arrangement?)

This would be great for hunting larger beast that you can only store one hide, take your pack animal with you hunting, Bring 2 bear/moose/elk/bison pelts back with you......

Be awesome if it works on a permanent basis, anyone else tried it yet?

I've been having the same thoughts about the horse, you can ride donkeys and mules, but you can't bond.

All I know is that I once did have a "work horse" which was basically hitched in camp to just carry extra carcasses when I went out on a longer hunting trip, however after doing a mission it disappeared. Can be because I got another horse after killing some dude, so I brought the horse to sell it, which is when I noticed that the "temporary" horse marker disappeared from the map.

Maybe someone knows better how it works and if there's a work around from having the horse despawning

No, I've done it several times, the game has crashed on me a few times too, the horse is still there. Unless you're talking about online, I have no clue if it's the same

You can do this; not sure about with donkeys though. I regularly use two horses.

To make it permanent you put one horse you want to use in the stable. Take out the other horse you want to use and take it to go and get a random horse you want as a sort of 'burner'.

Take the burner horse back to the stable and leave your permanent one outside but within whistling range. Enter the stable and saddle up the one you want to use. Sell the burner. Exit the stable and whistle for the one you left outside. You now have two permanent horses :)

Enjoy.

I have tried that once? But when I saddle up any other horse that I have stabled, it would instantly put my previous main horse into the stable..? Not sure if I did something wrong there. Is there maybe a video that shows how its done?

So far its been working fantastic just leaving the 2'nd horse at the base camp.
I'm going to give what you described a shot and see what happens.
I've been under the impression that once you enter the stable it would automatically place all into the stable as Jindrik said.

Have the thoroughbred that jumps off a cliff not far from the main campsite in the stable already,
it would be able to keep up with my main horse much better than the one I picked up yesterday anyway.

Still want to try it with a donkey, but I've only seen the one so far.
Seems like there would be more of them around?
Mules too, which would be even better than a donkey, havent even seen a mule though.

I've seen several mules/donkeys on a farm/ranch just north west of emerald ranch, the one that belongs to Bob Crawford (the dude you robbed and stole wagon from for the fence mission).
I'm bad at making out the names of the places because of the style but I think it says Paimondy Dell?

Also see several times a donkey just west of emerald ranch on the farm that's closer to it. Can't make out the name at all, something farm lol. I've traveled through that area quite alot and I've seen a mule/donkey at least on one of these 2 farms.

And iirc I'm pretty sure I've even seen them in emeral ranch as well, but I'm not sure, might have just been horses.

Edit: I'm at emerald ranch right now and there's a 3 star mule standing next to the stable where you bring stolen wagons to the fence. Not saying that you will find it there 100% of the time, but I'm sure if you ride around emerald ranch you'll find at least 1 mule/donkey

Edit 2: I don't think your plan with mules being a "cargo carrier" will work since you can't get any bonding with mules/donkeys, meaning there's no way to make it follow you, even with lasso, since you can't get bonding, every time you throw lasso on it, it'll get agitated and you'll have to dismount and try to calm it down. Also if you leave it unhitched it tends to walk back to wherever you stole it from.
And if you were thinking of riding the mule as a main mount well.. good luck with that, they have the lowest possible stamina and health bar, can't gallop for longer than like 150 meters before it starts draining your core. And I'm pretty sure since you can't bond with it, and get it as "temporary horse" it'll just despawn once you quit/reload the game.

Emerald ranch is the only place I'd seen a donkey, just rode over there today and presto a mule was there..

You are correct Jindrik, you cannot bond with them and seeing the pelt level which I didnt even pay attention to with the donkey at the time, game treats them the same as wild game animals!

Kinda a bummer because they would make a more authentic pack animal...
I somehow doubt that Rockstar intended for anyone to have a pack animal anyways, even though it does work with horses (for now at least)

Still have not had a chance to try the stable trick, I'll give it a shot a bit later today.

You might be missing a key step which is to saddle up the horse you *don't* want to keep before entering the stables. The one with a saddle automatically gets put in the stable. This is exactly why you need a third horse to get it done, otherwise you're just going to swap between two horses when you want both horses out.

Can this be done online?

I'm not sure as I don't play online. My guess is no though!

Okay, well that makes sense, if you have 2 stabled horses you wanna get out, that seems to be the way to do it.

However, you can also find a suitable horse that you'll use, gain at least level 1 bonding with it, and no matter what you do, reload the save, do a mission, whatever, the horse will stay, which is what I have been doing this whole time.

But that's a good way to get rid of the free horse you get with the delux edition that cant be sold.. which is what I'm gonna do at some point, thank you for the video!
