I suggest getting a bolt action and varmint rifle, both are the main guns for hunting and alot of daily challenges are based on that.

Rolling block for pvp and lancaster with small scope for pve.

Lancaster, Bow, LeMat Revolvers, Bolt Action Rifle, Rolling Block then lastly the Double Barrel Shotgun.

All depends on if you are more PVE or PVP orientated but those are some of the best for both.

I pretty much kept the main weapons and got a bow and throwing weapons for stealth.

Later though the semi auto or repeating shotgun is great.

The starters are decent, I still use the long arm repeater, and the cattleman's revolver (with a navy as off hand) and I'm lvl 28.
I've bought the Navy, bolt action, bow, and double barrel shotgun, and their pretty good in pve, haven't tested in pvp.
It really just depends on what your more focused on. The bolt action is essential for early big-game hunting though...

Rolling Block is a meme

Rifle: Springfield for General Use/Varmint for Head Hunting in PvP
Repeater: Lancaster
Revolver: Navy or LeMat for General Use/Sawed off Shotguns for Close Range PvP
Shotgun: Pump Action or Semi-Auto

A lot of people will say Bolt Action and that used to be the case. But it's been nerfed pretty hard, so Springfield it is.

Just to go a bit more in depth

If you need to switch weapons, the Springfield has virtually no down time for the first shot from switch or first shot from popping out of cover. It also has a slightly faster bolt ♥♥♥♥ than the bolt action rifle making it much better for PvP than the Bolt Action or Rolling Block. Only use the Rolling Block if you plan to pick off heads from serious distances.

Also, if you go LeMat, you don't really need to pick up shotguns since the LeMat can serve the purposes of high powered revolver and shotgun. If you want a proper shotgun, then go for the Navy Revolvers over the LeMat.

I use just the Cattleman Revolver I love it.
But I use what i injoy best and just try and have fun sure there weapons probble alot better but i seem to do better with just the cattleman revolver cause my aim not the best so perfer to fight closer range to mid range where my revolver can reach and i can use paint it black ability card or fan my revolver and use cover when needed.
I don't play with a controller and use mouse and keyboard so there no aim assist so i use paint it black to help alot.

Honestly you can get by with the weapons they give you. lol a headshot is a headshot. But that repeating/semi shotgun is beast.
