Is ERR_GFX_STATE actually a corrupt save file? Yes it is... at least for me it is
Is ERR_GFX_STATE actually a corrupt save file?

I've played the game 122 hours with no problems. Today after playing for 3 hours, I exit the game, make some coffee, come back and start again... bam: ERR_GFX_STATE error... out of nowhere.

I tried every solution I could find with Google and NOTHING works. Deleting the sga files, removing local account data, adding -ignorepipelinecache to the launch options, try to start online and load from there etc.... nothing works.

During the first 50 hours I made backups so I decided to replace the complete R* documents folder with my backup and presto: the game runs just fine.

Wish I didn't stop making backups. I got to trust the game's save system and that appears to be my downfall.

122 hours lost

EDIT

I have found the problem:
I narrowed it down to the profile folder.

I decided to replace the latest modified files in the profile folder with the ones from the backup to see what file would make it run.

As soon as I replace (not sure if the numbers are the same for everyone)

SRDR30015
SRDR30015.BAK

the game works again. All data in the documents folder is from my latest save except these two files! I assume these ARE the save files 'cause I'm back 70 hours in the game.

I tried replacing the xml file from the working backup, but that didn't work out. Safe mode also doesn't work. It says it can't start rdr2.exe.

Only when I replace the complete backup I made about 70 hours ago (complete rdr folder in documents) my game starts.

It feels like something is corrupt.

[edit]

This was an answer to a ninja deleted response. At least I tried it out.

So far I narrowed it down to the profile folder. When I use the profile folder from the backup and insert it in the latest (now corrupted) save folder, the game starts where I was 70 hours ago. It's got nothing to do with the sga files or the launcher at all. It's something in the profile folder that triggers the ERR_GFX_STATE crash!

i've had the exact same thing happen to me just now.
i'm able to go into the main menu, press story and am getting the loading screens.
after some loading it just crashes with err_gfx_state.
haven't been able to figure out whats causing it yet.
game was working for many hours before without a single crash.

I'm getting the same crash. Not sure what to do either

Sorry, the comment deleted was mine. I misread your original post.

I would point out that this error is completely useless. You will get the very same error message if the game fails to change window / fullscreen mode. It is a generic catch-all error for any graphics related issue :-\

Kaldaien seems to be correct, the error message isn't very helpful.
I got my game working, too.

First, i verified the game files through steam, still crashed.
Then I removed the sga_vulkan_final_init.vk.XXXX files from the settings folder but that didn't help either.
Lastly I ran the game in safe mode. Which worked (I think it uses DirectX there instead of Vulkan.)
Afterwards, I started the game normally again with my original graphics settings and it did still work.

So not sure what happened here...

Damn... for me replacing those two files work. Meaning all other data is ok and my actual save is damaged :(

That's entirely possible. As part of the load screen code in a lot of games, they read 5+ of your most recent save file images. If a thumbnail image is corrupted this kind of thing can happen.

>> Most games have the courtesy to give you a more useful error message though!

What's truly worrisome is that some games don't stop at loading just a few of your saves, and will actually read every single save every time you open their save/load screen. If you have a game that's taking a long time to access these menus, you should clean up your old saves.

I am screwed :(

I can either choose to drop back into the story 70 hours ago or start a new game (and make frequent backups from now on).

If it's any consolation, my PS4 broke half way through this game... I opted to buy an Xbox One X + X1X version and start the game over again rather than repair the PS4.

There is something that happens late in the game's story that you probably don't want to rush into anyway. Better to get distracted with side-content until that gets old and then finish the story.

I was doing just that :) Was totally role playing the entire 122 hours. I was at the isle of Guarma when this happened.

If you go to This Pc>documents>rockstar games>red dead 2 >settings and delete the three vulkan files ( as they are re aquired when the game is launched anyways) it fixes it or atleast for me it does.

Appreciate you dropping in, but if you read my OP you'd know I already tried that and my problem is actually a corrupted save game.
