Keyboard Controls Unreliable

I'm in the opening act in Story Mode, and I can't use WASD, or any of my letter keys whatsoever. Tab, shift, escape-- they all work fine. Is this a common issue, and/or is there a patch available to fix this?

I've never had such a problem, though I remapped most of the keys, so the movement keys aren't WASD. I have noticed some issues with key rebindings not taking effect since the last update when I try to change them, so they may have introduced some new issues there, but WASD not working is pretty severe. Either way, unless you've told the steam client to not update the game, you should be on the latest version - though you can tell the client to verify the files to be sure.

Strange...maybe there is a setting that has activated controller input for you instead of KBM?

You'd see a lot more threads if this was a common occurrence. Something is wonky on your end.

Must be something on my side. I’ve no controllers (never particularly found myself better with them), so I have my doubts about that sort of input confusion. I’ll do some tinkering.

This is kinda late but im having the same problem. Just failed a legendary bounty because it won't let me use WASD. can't even use the dead eye mode (caps lock)

Check any and all background programs. For instance; if you launch photoshop it will eat your ESC key

OP here. I've never been able to find a solid conclusion on what causes it / what makes it stop, but I've found that restarting your PC (more often than not) works. It's shameful that we have to do this as paying consumers, but that's the only solution I've been able to find.

Yeah, restarting works for me too, but its very annoying to experience the problem once in a while, especially when you are on a mission. Let's hope the issue will just go away in future updates.

I'm having the same issue. I can use WASD, and J, M, B etc. , but the Tab key is dead, LShift doesn't cause Arthur or his horse to run, I can't access the Horse Inventory, etc.

I validated the game files with no result. I uninstalled and re-installed the game, and that worked - once. Then it was right back to a half-dead keyboard. My gaming PC is used only for games, so there are no other active applications.

All other games work just fine with both KBM and controller. It's only RDR2 that has this issue.

I just tried restarting the game, just for fun. Controls all seemed to work (Horse Inventory, Weapon Wheel, etc.) except for LShift - it still doesn't cause the horse to run. Then, I joined Dutch on the mission to take down the O'Driscolls, and everything stopped working again.

This may be the worst game I've ever purchased on Steam. Can't get a refund because I've spent too much time testing the various "fixes" that were suggested here and elsewhere, none of which did anything.

Did anyone ever fix this issue? I'm having the same problem. My weapon wheel won't work, holding tab, crouch, satchel, jumping, using any weapon. I don't use controller, only keyboard.

Hey, man, OP here. I never did figure out a solution, and I uninstalled RDR2 shortly after this post. I wish I had better news (or better, a solution) but I only ever got as far as "restarting it gives it another chance to function". Of course, I haven't touched the game in almost five years-- if it's still doing this, that's absolutely tragic.

Dude, you have a broken save data and cloud save, delete both and all will be fine
