Horse Thieves - Prevention
I posted an inquiry about a week ago on how to prevent the theft of your horse and although at least one person said that they knew how to do it, they did not specify how. So here it is.

In order to prevent horse theft just open your LOG/PLAYER MENU and the select Freeroam > Stables > Horses > Owned Horses . . . and change HORSE ACCESS so it readers ''me only'' and also change CARGO ACCESS to ''me only'' and this way nobody is going to steal either the horse or the cargo.

To be fair, it's pretty buried, and personally, I would have expected something like that in the game settings, not in the section that the key mapping menu labels "Log / Player Menu." It's unlikely that anyone looking for such a setting is going to look where it is without digging through most of the settings first. Now, I also dug through pretty much all of the menus to see what there was and found it, and I would have expected most people to go through all of the menus to see what was there, but I'm also the kind of person who would read the entire manual for a game before playing it back when games actually had proper manuals (and honestly, this game could use one given some of its complexities), whereas many people seem to always ignore manuals (which is one of the reasons that we now have to go through annoyingly pedantic tutorials in many games instead of getting a proper manual).

Thank you. It's nice to see somebody using their intellect rather than being snide for the sake of abusing another person. I used to post such tips and hints widely in the forums but have stopped doing so because of the sheer level of cattyness among allegedly 'intelligent' players. Maybe I'm getting old (been playing computer games since 1981) but I like to think that gaming brings people together, not allows others - anonymous behind a screen - to be abusive for some self-satisfying reason. Erynar is HONORABLE. More than I can say for the other posters.

Indeed I miss the era of manuals. Back then you at least had some inkling of what could be done in a game. To date I've been 'guessing' what my options are.

Over 100 hours of the online mode. My horse has been ridden by another player twice and neither case was an attempt to grief me. Rockstar should make your horse buck off whoever is riding it the moment they hear you whistle. The magic lock to prevent people from mounting your horse is rather harmful to immersion.

RDR1 had the whistle function in single player. Why didn’t they include it here?

RDR2 also has the ability to whistle to make your horse come to you, but I don't know what happens if you whistle while someone else is riding your horse.

BTW, as I understand it, it's not actually possible for anyone to truly steal your horse. If you have the settings set so that anyone can ride it, then they can take it and run off with it, but they can't really keep it. From what I read, you can't even take a wild horse and make them yours in the online version, let alone sell a horse (though I haven't actually tried either). You just get the horses that you buy and at most can temporarily borrow the horse of an NPC or another player. Still, I locked down my horse so that only I could use it so that I could treat it the same way I do in single player and not worry about it.

I saw a video mentioning this, and the gist was that if you change horse access *while someone is riding your horse*, it will buck them off and potentially kill them (falling fast/into something).

Much better to leave it open and do that imo. :Khappy:

350 hours online and one person tried to take my horse... I shot him off...

You can also whistle and that will do the same.

Well, in my experience the person who stole the horse just sits there where they went. In one instance the horse did not return, while in another the horse thief did not get off, nor did the horse attempt to throw them off. I had two choices, log out and log back in again or shoot the offender.

I'll be honest, I enjoyed immensely shooting the offender. He had it coming.
