Should GTX 1080 use Vulkan or dx12?
I'm only at the first part of the game in story mode, in the snow, and I don't know which API is best. I'm struggling to see the difference between the two. With Vulkan I think I get slightly better overall FPS but I notice dips sometimes. With dx12 I get slightly less overall FPS but the dips aren't as frequent.

Anyone have input?

On sites that list tips on how to improve performance, one of the things mentioned was to switch to dx12. As for whether it actually made a difference, I can't tell for sure.
Always use Vulcan

I have the same GTX 1080. Generally Vulkan more FPS but more frequent drops while DX12 a little less FPS but more smooth gameplay without drops. I think it's better DX12 not to notice significant drops. The new Vulkan 1.2 API has been released recently and is implemented in Nvidia 441.99 you can try and describe the differences whether it works better:

https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver

Generally wait for Nvidia RTX 30xx Series and then there should be no problems. Problems in the game also cause numerous implemented DRM's.

Just did some testing, while with Vulcan the FPS counter remained solid 60 mostly all the time, there were lots of visible lags and 'frame jumps', just what I'd see if FPS would frequently drop, and something were wrong with the Vsync as well.

Switching to dx12 the FPS counter changed from 60 a few times, but it gave a visibly more smooth gameplay.

(benchmark testing gave similar fps results, so that's not much help there)
Awesome feedback fellas. Much appreciated!

if you use vulkan, don't forget to set the "hiden" option in System.xml (takes away the stutters if using vulkan)

open this file and look for <asyncComputeEnabled value="false" /> and change it to <asyncComputeEnabled value="true" />

this option is not set ingame, its not in the settings. you can find the file here

With Vulkan I got artefacts in particles and weird textures in mud, DX12 runs perfectly. Not using an Nvidia card though.
