FF8 probably could use that kind of remake the most though. It's mechanically and narratively outdated and hard to justify recommending to anyone today.
FF7R was a terrible game a so i wouldnt that treatment on any half decent game.

So... what do you mean it sold bad?
If they remade the original but kept it very true to the old game, including the combat, it would have sold FAR more and you know it.
Not taking away from the success of the current remakes, I also personally really enjoyed the first one, I don't hate the combat. I personally like action rpg combat, but I also wish it was just turn based.
If they re-made ff6 to have modern graphics and turn based combat it would be a wet dream for me.
Also they are already currently working on an ff9 remake, that's been stated since a year or 2 ago so we can expect that one next. But I think it's going to be like the 8 remake, just a more modern remaster.
If you want a remake to sell 5 million or more copies, it has to be something like the Resident Evil 2 or FF7 remakes, which utilize modern gameplay sensibilities.
