Dune: Awakening

Anyone who played Swordmaster, looking for honest input.
Based on what I've seen so far, the Swordmaster skill tree is looking pretty broken in terms of PvP. Does the Swordmaster have any skills that increase shield durability or any other increased survivability skills? Did the time to kill in melee seem good?

you have in planetologist tree that increase flat battery energy and rechage %
swordmaster gets melee dmg and after kill melee dmg and stamina increase passive but ever as a non swordmaster the time to kill in melee was ok atleast for pve

The main problem is that we lack talents to boost melee damage, while there are plenty of talents available for ranged players.

Melee is very deadly, but very easy to deal with, with crowd control and stamina management, if melee players gets caught in a grav grenade without any mobility off cd, its over.

I don't think a "Pure sword" style will work out for PvP without teamwork, but that is only really assumptions from the older versions of the skill tree and before the stunlock change, you will absolutely want to mix it with other skill trees and keep a pocket gun on you.

tl;dr I think melee will be seen as broken for the first few weeks until people learn to deal with it with CC and mobility.

So, the worm tooth crysknife doing 190 damage seems like great way to end someone if you can actually land the hit. It's a one trick pony though, so if you mess up, the knife is gone.

I played Mentat/Swordmaster and got to do try pvp vs a random person and went 2-0. Not going to say my ability I used but I will hint I used 2 mentat ability once I get within 10 feet of the enemy. I was nice and did not destroy the sandbike they used to get to the PVP zone but I did loot them.

Tip look more into CC with your melee.

I intend to start with Mentat because like the Bene Gesserit, is a strong class. I just don't know enough about the Swordmaster and based on what little PvP I've seen, melee just doesn't seem to be in the cards.

It's just way too easy to unload a clip from an SMG disruptor vs. Swordmaster trying to melee someone down. I did witness Summit1g getting stunlocked during a melee duel. Not sure how, but somehow he lost 75% of his stamina in less than a second during the fight and ended up stunlocked. This is what I'm trying to figure out. Was that due to a Swordmaster ability? The Devs watching that quickly stated that that would get fixed, but I don't know if they meant being stunlocked or the 75% loss of stamina in less than a second.

Right now I am leaning more between Mentat / Trooper or Mentat / Bene Gesserit.

This was due to how stamina worked in that early build of the game, which has since been changed. Basically, you need stamina to dodge out of an attack chain, but while getting hit your stamina would not recover. That led to an infinite hitchain, however light attacks do not dent the shields much, so it led to a loop. Swordmasters are able to deflect darts and the like back, so they have options but as I said above, it's a neat defensive option but the better defensive option is just to throw a stagger out to get them to stop shooting you.

Nobody has really had a chance to test the new combat tweaks or how they "fixed" the stunlock though, so it's very much a case of "We will have to wait and see"

After going over all the class abilities, I get a very strong sense of class combos.

Bene Gesserit / Swordmaster

Mentat / Trooper

Combining them in any other way is, unfortunately, counter intuitive. Of course, I only say this because both Bene Gesserit and Swordmaster are focused on melee, while Mentat and Trooper are focused on ranged. You can definitely opt for mixing them for a Jack of all Trades approach to be more versatile, but then you reduce your own strengths in the process.

I do honestly believe you will see more Bene Gesserit / Swordmaster and Mentat / Trooper combos than anything else. With both using their remaining points in Planetologist.
I went Bene Gesserit then Trooper and mixed in a few points on Planetologist. It worked out fine but if I had a choice later in the game and not just the beta I would most likely have points in all of the disciplines. Its hard to avoid Melee when you are being rushed so a few points in Swordmaster might have some value. I like a few of the energy passives of Planetologist and many of the passives of the Bene Gesserit but can see most of my points going into Trooper and Mentat. Gotta love those guns.

I can see people specializing as say a Crowd Control who simply stuns people, but stuff like that will only be beneficial in groups. I expect the majority of players are probably going to be playing in clans / guilds of 10 players or less, of which, the majority of time will be 2, 3 or 4 players completing tasks together.

However, there are probably going to be a lot of lone wolf solo players and those are the players that are going to need to be self sufficient.

There will be a lot of varying builds depending on situations, but in the end, we are still going to see META builds and I think those are going to happen a lot sooner than I'd expect.
