I mean, no Fremen for a start because the game 'lore' suggests they've all been eradicated.
No mention of great houses, only sardukar and a reverend mother mentioned.
I expect this to be as you say a rust/conan type multiplayer...limited number of people per server, otherwise if it is a true MMO with the intended graphics and all the mechanics calcs behind the scenes it'll be a stutterfest.
I expect story missions in instanced caves, bases with shields you recharge to prevent PVP attacks, and players running around trying to kill/gather/loot stuff then booking it back to their base shields before the zerg catches them. It'll be nothing like Rust or Conan because those are essentially private server games with far too few players per map, while this one aims for giant PVP zones with hundreds or thousands of players roaming the final Desert.
There is a faction system where you can gain standing for the great houses which will let you unlock certain things I imagine.
Found that info on reddit; https://www.reddit.com/r/duneawakening/comments/1iw6zpj/faction_serverwide_buffs_and_landsraad_voting/
So solo / singleplayer creative mode is going to be possible (like with conan exiles)?
MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online, referring to games that support a large number of players interacting in a shared virtual world. However, having limited-sized servers contradicts the 'massively' aspect, as it restricts the number of concurrent players, reducing the scale and immersion typically associated with MMOs.
Survival Games Like Rust, Ark, and Conan Are NOT MMOs – Here’s why! because there seems to be some confusion about whether survival games like Rust, Ark, and Conan Exiles qualify as MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online games). Let’s break it down logically shall we chaps?
What is an MMO?
An MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game is typically defined by:
- A persistent world where thousands (or more) of players interact.
- A single shared game world or interconnected servers forming a unified experience.
- Large-scale player interaction beyond just one limited custom server.
Examples of actual MMOs: World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy XIV, planetside 2 etc.
Why Games Like Rust, Ark, and Conan Exiles Are NOT MMOs
- Limited Server Sizes
Survival game servers usually cap at 100-500 players (often less).
MMOs allow thousands of players in a single, connected and PERSISTENT world.
- No Persistent, Evolving World
Servers wipe regularly (weekly/monthly resets), resetting all player progress.
MMOs have permanent worlds where progress and history persist over years.
- Not a Single, Seamless World
Survival games split players across separate, independent servers.
MMOs have one giant world (or interconnected instances) where all players coexist.
Survival Games = Large Multiplayer sure, server depending, NOT MMO
Survival games like Rust, Ark, and Conan Exiles fall into the category of “Large-Scale Multiplayer Survival” or “Persistent World Survival Games”—but they are not MMOs.
Game is bare bones and boring. Combat uninspired. They'll sell a lot of copies because of the IP and the game will be so buggy and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it will die two weeks after release and be stuck at a sub 10k player count of people so high on copium they can't smell the ♥♥♥♥ they're eating.
As someone who has done alot of world-building projects, in my opinion, that's a better way because you are right it is not Dune. Dune lore can not be replicated in a video game format (like this anyway) where you get spoon-fed lore piece by piece at random. It would make a carefully designed puzzle look like a partial picture and, not alot of people are going to appreciate it side for people like us who are into those kind of details and deeply seeded lore.
It's best reserved for another medium.
Yes, you have totally misunderstood what the definition of an MMO is.
Planetside 2 is an MMO, while it's not from the same subcategory of MMO's as games like WoW.
Dune Awakening is simply an MMO of a different subcategory as well.
If it is going to be any kind of ark/rust/conan clone, its not an MMO, sorry.
Wow, you must be really fun at parties.
