closed betas are released to a restricted group of individuals by invitation, while open beta is for anyone interested.

since this is all controlled by invitation and keys, it's NOT open regardless whether you think it "technically" is

No. Its a closed beta as it is only for people getting a key. If it was open (as it should been this close to release tbh!) anyone would be able to download and play the beta.
