A. Their server meshing tech is successful. They are able to maintain decent performance with larger number of players in one area. They game stays exclusive to their private servers.
B. Their server meshing tech fails. It is laggy and unplayable with large numbers of players in the Deep Desert. They develop a client that supports a smaller group of players and release it so we can host our own servers.
It is simply going to take time to see how it works out. They won't knee jerk after release. Even if things are bad they will simply continue to work on it and it will be months before they consider throwing in the towel.
Until then. You are gonna have to take the game as it is presented, because right now there is no client for us to host. It doesn't exist. Everything they have developed works with their server meshing tech, which means multiple servers linked together and communicating with one another.
That server meshing tech has been in use for some time, one good (although failed game) example for the tech is Atlas. It's simply a matrix grid for the map, self hosted and seamless transition between the grids even on a self hosted map.
You could have even a 50x50 size map if you had the server resources to support it. It was released in 2018 with self hosted server right away.

Same system as described with a home server and rest of the grid, even fully interchangeable and customizable maps...
There is absolutely no reason to not release the self hosted server, except for their own reason of forcing the players on the official ones.
I think my question here is simple. How do you know that this solution is the same one Funcom is utilizing? I don't think any of us have that information. So everything (myself included) is speculation on how their meshing system functions and what the hardware requirements are. When I search for games with meshing technology, I get an extremely short list. So it seems to be on the new side of things still.
At this time, there is little to no incentive for them to pull a 180 on their plans. Wishlisting and interest in the title remains high. So why would they not move forward as is and see how things go? They can always change their minds later.
Why wouldn't they if the demand is there and it would increase their sales?
Namely because it changes what has been the intended design for a few years now. Also it currently sits at 7th most wishlisted title on Steam as is. They are certainly going to go live as is. Then make the determination at a later date on how to handle private servers. If they even see the need to do so. They may wish to keep everything in the ecosystem under their control, like a traditional MMO would.

Traditionally, accomplishments in a MMO meant something amongst MMO players. Private servers kill that entirely.
Another good reason they wish to run the servers is if they intend on running a cosmetic store down the line. Seems to be more money in it than that from hosting sites.
Edit: I missed the OP, ooo unlucky. IDK, maybe refund.
They changed the naming from MMO to a multiplayer survival game. It's only labeled as an MMO on steam now, but so I Ark for example.
I just replied to the other post, it's not labeled as an MMO anymore, it's a multiplayer survival game now. So changes do happen.

If you are not interested in the title without private servers or an offline mode, I would encourage you to refund.
Ark is labeled as an MMO on Steam as well, yet it has single player and private servers...
Doesn't mean it can't be done.
Why would i give up on wanting private servers or offline mode? It also doesn't affect you or your gameplay experience, so why such a hate towards it?
I don't care about it. I just know they don't plan on having that in the cards for release. So anyone holding out for it happening in May will be disappointed. They have stated it will possibly come later, but again not during release. Plan accordingly.
just open your mind for this
