On May 20th players will have access to brand new worlds with no advanced start characters. Characters cannot be transferred between worlds, so the only way you'll even meet advanced start characters is if you choose to make a character on an advanced start world.
Also, the game will not focus on PvP at all. It will focus on survival for any meaningful progression, and that goes from start to finish. The Deep Desert is called a "PvP area" because it's PvP allowed, not because it's designed for PvP. It's designed for survival gameplay. There is nothing you cannot get regarding gear, building opportunities, or character advancement as a solo player or as someone who tackles deep desert gameplay by cooperation and staying away from the human predators. PvPers are just an other hazard to play around, just like the worm.
This is flat out untrue. Characters are divided into Worlds. Each World have 1 Deep Desert and an undisclosed number of Hagga Basins. We will not have fresh servers on the 20th of May, we will have fresh Worlds. You cannot transfer characters between worlds, so unless you specifically choose to start on a May 15th World you will never meet an advanced start character.
The end game is not PvP focused, it's survival with PvP allowed. PvPers who are looking for a PvP experience will feel the difference.
But it's a good idea to observe before buying, there is no rush. Since it's not PvP focused it's not a disaster arriving late to the party.
Ok, sorry for repeating the message then. Let's call my post "for posterity".
From what we've been told the game will not encourage group combat, but it's one solution to some problems in the Deep Desert. The end-game contracts are suggested to be mostly non-kill missions, like "harvest this much spice" or "make me 14 ornithopters". PvP combat comes into the picture as a possible solution when someone gets in the way of you doing that efficiently. You can of course go out of your way to arrange PvP group battles, and I'm sure many will, but that will often come at the expense of your end-game effectiveness.
The game is survival with PvP allowed.
