No private servers ?
I've recently heard that it was really not going to be like Conan Exiles in terms of multiplayer and that it will be more like MMORPG ? So no private servers and constantly with randoms. Is that right ? If so my hype just disappeared.

But its not. Its locked to official large player count servers. No private servers, no custom rulesets, nothing. Thats a huge removal of a core part of the survival genre which is player choice and community driven engagement.

Most players play on private servers, only a small slice play on official.

You're missing one 1 core thing... unlike those survival games like Ark or Conan, DUNE is a proper MMO.

Except its... not. Its split up among a ton of servers and regions with very limited player counts compared to any true MMO. It also lacks a ton of the gameplay mechanics of MMOs. Its literally just a survival game with more players per server than Conan had.

More and more mechanics will be added down the line and having servers with reasonable player counts I think is a good idea, It would be a little odd being on Arrakis and seeing tens of thousands of people.

We'll see how it pans out once it actually releases though.

yea, no private servers is kind of a deal breaker for me.
I love Dune, i have all the books and i have played each and every dune game to date but in this case, i will have to skip this game without the ability to host my own server.

Also a bit weird that only Harkonnen and Atreides are mentioned, are the other houses not available?

I don't think private servers would be feasible due to the devs saying they also want events and with private servers that would get a bit messy. They want more control over the experience which I think is a good move with something like this.

As for more houses that could come later with expansions I suppose.

Those things can be handled without forcing everyone onto public servers. . .
Hive servers are one of the options to handle global events but i guess they want to make sure their totally optional PvP is not that optional after all.

and God forbid that a few groups of players would have an entire server to themselves and never mix with other players, that would totally ruin the experience of each and every public server available.

You can always go play Ark or Conan if you want private servers :)

played both, on private servers.
but. . . i hear you, more sales for a developer of a game you like is a bad thing.

Private servers is a niche in the grand scope of things for a specific subset of gamers, the game will sell if it's fun.

I'm not against private servers but I think this all comes down to the devs wanting to control the way the game is experienced, with private servers you can go a little over the top in terms of rule sets, allowing mods etc... which can drastically change the experience.

that really depends on what they put into the available or allowed server options, I would not mind renting a server ingame as long as it does not go way beyond the standard price i pay for any other premium server and it allows me to control who is allowed onto that server.
we have always ran vanilla servers and we probably always will. . .except for one but that was because default was too easy.

Or they only want to have a say in who they run into while playing their game.

Its a sales move nothing more. Controlling the experience means more revenue from battlepasses and other crap. Its not a good move, it's stupid and there's literally no benefits to the user having your choice removed.

Without private servers, I do not see myself getting involved with this. Private servers for these style survival game that are akin to games like Conan Exiles, are standard requirements. There are a great many gaming groups that thrive on these types of games, hosting on their own hardware with flexibility to change settings for their established gaming community.

oh i was interested but if no private servers like conan exist on launch i'll probably never play it anyway. too many good games coming I'm interested in.

Well it's an MMO, It would be like expecting WoW or Elder Scrolls Online to have private servers, A little silly.
