In another thread this guy was saying PvP games never work. Forced PvP in MMOs never work, but somehow never heard of SWG which was one of the most popular PvP based MMOs of all time. And refuses to even look it up apparently.

But what set SWG apart from a typical PvP based MMO was the crafting.
Player driven economies aren't easy, EvE has managed for 20 years so there is hope.

LoL
1. to who are you speaking to? To some huge audience you pulled in here? :D LoL

2. That is factually not true and you are straigth up lying about things I, nor anyone ever said. To anyone who would know what this kiddo is about in this pointless thread, here is the other thread where I encountered this murican snowflake and where he is trying to make up stories from.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1172710/discussions/0/3815159923588414255/?ctp=5

3. You still refuse to write down the answer to a simple question. And i know very well why.

4. Man you muricans are so easy to F over. But never thought it would be so easy to discredit you. Under the same thread posted above you literally said:

While look at that who was the first to insta-attack someone even after his 1st interaction here with you which was only a simple innocent question. :D

Oh and...."LOL"

p.s.: That mysterious game you still refuse to name which you at least now said it is a game, was a freaking mess of a crapfest nobody played and was re-worked several times and then trashed for a reason. So yeah very good example. But at least we know why you won't name it.

I look forward when someone who doesn't hate PvP joins this conversation.
SWG was a great game and brings great memories to thousands of gamers.

I hope Dune: Awakening will take some ques from that project.

Star Wars Galaxies. It was mostly a player run economy, with dedicated crafter professions that produced all the good gear. Quality of the produce depended on a variety of different things, so finding someone who made "the best stuff" was pretty exciting. The difference between an average and exceptional product was pretty huge and a very noticeable difference.

As for the OP, though... seriously, don't get your hopes up. I know the possibilities can be exciting, but this is Funcom we're talking about. Anarchy Online was ridiculously buggy and incomplete for a long time, Age of Conan was never finished and probably would have been a significantly worse controversy than 2077 had it been released today, and Secret World was extremely mediocre. Arguably Conan Exiles is their best game, but even that had major problems for quite a long time. Also maybe Hellsinger, but that game is arguably only held up by its soundtrack. It's an average shooter with not a lot going for it. Funcom is notorious for holding great IP's and making middling games, and I would argue they only care about what the product sells, not whether or not it's actually good. They are a business, not a game developer.

Thanks for chiming in and I totally agree.

I'm going mostly on faith, I played Anarchy online and yeah it was really buggy. But I've watched (not played) Conan get better and better. There's a couple people on the official Dune Awakening discord that play Conan and they swear by it.

So I'm just hoping Funcom has learned from the past mistakes and uses what they've done with Conan as their base for Dune Awakening. Which makes sense because Awakening is going to be a survival PvP as well, so they've got a solid base to start with.

When I read that part about player crafters I couldn't help but think of SWG and the difference between a good crafter and a really great crafter was huge. I loved that armor I got it was worth spending a week chasing him down then waiting for his reply.

I just want that magic back!

Conan Exiles is a great game and in a pretty good spot now. There are some questionable asects to it, but it's still a fun survival game. I put a lot of time in to it, mostly because I'm a huge fan of Conan lore. I was bitter about Age of Conan for quite a long time, and Funcom did make up for it a bit with this.

Still, considering how it started out, I wouldn't be surprised if Dune suffers from serious problems at launch, too.

Yea player run indeed. Phoenix Corp was a guild that offered new players a free bike and other beni's for gathering assigned mats for the owner. Who was RMT'ing it to those crafters lol. With the changing landscape Dunes Eco could be just as promising as SWG. I mean in a video game setting a really good stillsuit could be the difference between not dying to no downtime like a good thumper that calls in your ride faster :carrionmouth:

I doubt stillsuits will be something you craft with varying quality. The entire concept of Dune, and certainly the game, would require you to be out in the sands gathering resources since 99% of the planet is a desert.

Thats my point bud,any old stillsuit can keep you alive but a great one could be so efficient your time can be spent on elsewhere instead of maintaining resources. That has more worth i.e your time is money. Just as a thumper that works faster would be a huge advantage in combat.

Yes I like this idea and it makes sense because they're planning a player driven economy.
Since stillsuits are going to be a major part of daily life on Arrakis, it makes sense players will be crafting\repairing\upgrading them.

And thats just a simple speed buff for those two items, sky's the limit for the Devs to come up with. I'm hoping that they are not "6 bOoKs OnLy!" gatekeepers, bacause the prequels have so much extinct tech from before the butlarian jihad (13k years before Dune) that could be those one of a kind player items.
Edit: To put that into perspective. One of Pauls ancestors was a genocidal megalomaniacal cybermech the size of Godzilla that solo'd planets.

The problem with crafting suits of different quality, imo, is that the majority of the game will certainly take place in the desert, and upgrading a suit just to spend more time in the desert would be tedious, all for an incremental increase in the time you can spend actually playing the game, which seems counterproductive to me.
