It is like Conan Exlile servers running in parallel and all of them called Hagga Basin on the larger map of Dune. Each of those can hold 40+ players and let them explore and build.
And from those smaller servers you can also transition to the large PvP desert were probably there is nothing interesting just sand and spice.
And you can go to those hubs to meet with other players and NPCs.
Is not like mmos used to be. They bend the meaning because they have this large single PvP area.
are you sure about that? classic MMOs rarely had more than a few dozen players per instance/area and lagged out for 100+, so the quantities seem pretty similar to me what we called a MMO for decades. But yeah, i would hope that they can get that 40+ to 100+. Would be more fun for sure :D

If those Hagga Basin servers have all a specific map, other maps will be added (like Ark Survival got different maps) and might have a different name.
Given how big the maps are in Ark and Connan, that is ok for me.
What I don't like is the overworld map, how we travel with a small dot representing the ornithopter and that we will transition directly into the social hub instance.
I want to be inside the world not watching from above.
yeah, i definitely agree there, i can understand that we probably wont be able to cover the thousands of miles across the shield wall, but i definitely would prefere a more immersive solution for that. On the other hand it makes the game more modular and thus possible expansions/DLCs a lot easier, which is nice for longeviety.
My comment also was only refering to the MMO stuff, because the standard 3rd or 1st person MMO mostly also "only" support that many ppl per instance. If they really manage to pack 1k+ players in the deep desert at the same time, and it doesnt lag or lead to other problems, i'd be seriously impressed.
No thanks. I swear every time I see a MMO/multiplayer game there is someone complaining about the fact its doesn't have single player. There is plenty of other single player titles out there. Not every title needs to accommodate single players.
Like others have mentioned, if its anything like Conan there will be private servers. Worst case scenario, just play with your friends. Why does it matter so much that there is other people on the server, or pvp in general?
Snip of this, because that's basically the concern for me. This looks really neat, but the seeming focus on forced FL-PVP is off-putting. Very few projects succeed in lasting even a year. The ones that do are generally relegated to a very small niche player base that limits any sort of growth, as the studio and/or publisher look to devote more dev time to other projects due to lack of revenue stream. They are, by and large, DOA.
Will be keeping an eye on it to see what the final result is - if it offers options it might thrive, and I'm all for opt-in PVP because providing both experiences is healthy for fans of all play styles and a steady population (ie. future for content). If it sticks too rigidly to forced FL-PVP centric design, I don't see much of a future and will probably skip it. Too many in the past that all end up a toxic waste of time, rife with a ridiculous amount of cheating and other nonsense . This leads to it generally suffering a massive population collapse after the first 3-6 months that then proceedes to ghost town central before the inevitable shutdowns.
And players will also spread out to collect that spice rather than have zerg vs zerg battles.
I never looked how such large maps are implemented but I assume players in different parts of the large desert map will be handled by different CPUs.
The overworld map could be removed completely. So far it has no associated gameplay and I am already used in other mmos to enter a portal and exit on a different map with some occasional cut scene which I can also skip. A cut scene would be better than watching the map with a dot on it.
I hope the social hubs are large, not as large as the Hagga Basin but still large enough so I can chose to land on the edge of the map and walk and enter through a gate or chose to land directly in the center on some landing pad.
Sorry but history teaches that full pvp forced mmo never last.
Probably gonna be filled with microtransactions and trolls as usual.
