This is probably such a terrible concept for a game
First off, it's Funcom--♥♥♥♥ them. They destroyed the Secret World and alienated an incredibly loyal fanbase by making a dumbed-down, lootbox-powered version of it . . . that received ONE update and still has less content than the original. They never deserve a dime.

That aside; either this game really needs to reinvent the wheel or it's a horrible setting for the established survival game formula. Being Dune could make the game actually brilliant but I have almost zero faith in it.

You need a stillsuit. Always. There's no wandering around naked in this game, no making rags out of spice fibers and then moving onto leather and metal armor/clothes, etc. Even one of the Fremen's most brilliant leaders dies horribly when abandoned in the desert with a damaged stillsuit.

Arrakis is a single biome world. 100% desert. There are no distant jungles, no cold alpine areas; no rivers, seas, or lakes. This is going to be a very boring game to look at. I love the desert but there is going to be functionally no variety in this game; it's going to be sand dunes, rocks, and maybe even salt plains if we're lucky.

What exactly is the sand walk going to be? Do you have to cross the dunes in some weird janky motion; forward, stop, strafe right, forward, strafe left, jump, stop, forward? Is it going to be a mini-game you have to perform to cover most of the area, having to play DDR to go anywhere; you didn't hit left fast enough so now a worm eats you? Or do you toggle "sand walk" on and slowly shuffle forward?

There is probably a more logical setting for how we know survival games operate; at the cost of losing the iconic dunes and sandworms--Salusa Secundus. It's a prison planet and a death world few survive; it makes much more sense for people to be tossed naked into the wilderness there. We know almost nothing about it other than it's badly scarred by nuclear war; but if you want snow plains with radioactive blizzards or swamps farting out chlorine gas or whatever, it's an completely open landscape to invent. Hell, it'd be neat if the game had an "ending"; you survive whatever challenges are tossed at you and get to join the Sardaukar.

I have little hopes that this is going to be more than sci-fi flavored Conan Exiles. It's not a good setting for the stock survival game. Also, ♥♥♥♥ Funcom forever.

I'm still holding out hope for Arrakis being a PvP zone based around collecting spice, with the ability to setup camps or mountain cave settlements, but there also being space travel allowing you to go to places like Caladan or other planets that have active law enforcement, essentially PvE / safe areas. It's entirely doable if the game is an actual MMO as they have suggested it will be, and not just a small group survival game like Conan.

Think EVE where Arrakis is 0.0 space, Caladan is high security, and maybe Geidi Prime is low security. Or any other MMO with varying PvP rulesets depending on the zone.

In Dune illegal act's can be done with consent, or agreed mutual combat like Kanly nowhere would be safe lol. Off planet job's like smuggling should 100% be a thing also BG,Mentat,Swordmaster training.

That some wall you wrote. You do know that there is water cache's under that sand that the freemen kept hidden and Paul had visions about and has seen. Paul has to decide to release the water or to keep the spice flowing. Either way I'm really happy too see I hope a sandbox Dune. And yes I am a fan.

It could be good, I am keeping an eye on it. I like the idea of a constantly changing world due to the storms, should keep things very interesting and stop it from getting stale. The other Dune game (spice wars) is phenomenal, so here's hoping this one is good too.

Perhaps Dev studios will start looking into AI anticheat in the near future, it "worms" my heart knowing anti cheat will profile people and ban across all games using it.

I don't even think Funcom is that bad.
Every pub/dev has made mistakes in the past.

Oh it's not right off the bat, they've had multiple decades to humiliate themselves at this point.

actually for this generation of gamers its very hard, they need a ton of attention...

Funcom has shown that they are *really* good with lore and world building. They are equally bad at balancing a game and creating a functioning in-game economy. I therefore expect an immersive gaming experience, but with a lot of frustration over bugs, glitches and exploits.
Pvp only? Will suck... Pvp communities are no more enough mature to handle full pvp games they turn them in grief fests.

This is actually such a big problem, that it gives me hope that we're getting something awesome. Varied landscape is such an obviously important aspect to a game, and so completely impossible on Arrakis. There's no way Funcom doesn't know this, which I'm hoping means they have a cool solution. What could it be? Well, the game is tagged as an MMO. A lot of developers incorrectly put that tag on games that aren't actually MMOs, but as far as I know Conan Exiles doesn't use that tag, which means to me that Funcom actually understands what it means.

Except a very cursory glance at Conan's Steam page does in fact show that Funcom consider it an MMO.

I always have loved Dune, and this game does look very interesting. That being said i dont trust Funcom. so i'll wait a few weeks for the review to point out everything wrong with the game before i even think about buying this
PortalShifter Mar 5, 2024 @ 7:45am
Oh no, only one biome? The game is ruined!

Just kidding, it's totally fine.
