Why would someone scuttle a ship full of loot?
I've chased ships around before through the sea or to a port only to see them scuttle or sink with a ship full of loot. This has happened twice now and I'm wondering why, the most logical answer is that it's someone rage quitting or dcing, why they would rage quit with 50'000 gold worth of loot is beyond me unless they're some rich arisocrat and it's not worth the money. So is it just dcing or botting or something?

And that's perfectly fine. You always have the right to run if you don't wish to fight or lose your treasure.

Just remember that the other crew also has just as much right to keep chasing.

50k gold is nothing to most people
Probably just have to log off and don't have time to run around fighting for an extra 30 min.

There does also seem to be a weird thing sometimes where every ship you approach gets disconnected

Someone mentioned it on these discussions once and I thought it was an exaggeration but I've observed the same thing at least twice since then. Not just one ship either. I had 4 in a row during one of those times.

Are you sure they scuttled? They could've dived to another server. The loot and other stuff (emmisary flag, barrels) float up from your POV. From his POV he only lost the loot but kept the flag and supps. Especially now it happens often because people want to hunt the new megs and don't care about loot that much...

probably the time it takes to fight is worth more than 50k

I often get hazelnutbeard when another ship approaches. I can't tell if it's a game issue, or if a cheater used a DDoS attack.

Also, some players just don't want to fight others - or are focused on milestones (e.g. catch 1000 specific fish, no need to sell). So they just go next asap.

If you're a non-PvPer and some sweat are trying to chase you the most efficient way is to just scuttle at once and reset. It'll save time and energy, so it'll be better to just scuttle than to be chased for 30 minutes.
What I've gathered from this is that my fellow sea of thieves players are cowards!

Some people just play for the numbers, and numbers says if they don't know how to defend themselves they'll make bigger numbers by starting another voyage in a new server rather than defending that poor treasure and wasting a lot time.

To some people doing any action that is not grinding money is a waste of time even when that money is imaginary and it will be lost once they get bored of sot and quit the game.

I been in situations where i helped someone sink a skelly and let them keep all the loot, then returned back to them to see if they needed help with someone else and they thought i wanted to sink them and they scuttled.

Whats the point in wasting your time fighting sweats when you can load back into another game and continue what you were doing?

Example - I logged into the game for the first time in about 3 months. Tried fishing with new HC emissary- found new meg too. Killed new meg and loaded loot up. No cballs left, no food. As always, within three minutes..... Oh boy, here comes a crew of 4. Why even try? Take my ♥♥♥♥, who cares how good you are at PVP. Some of us just want to enjoy the game. No wonder this game is still ♥♥♥♥.

For one my crew is never more then 1 or 2 people, anyone with a bit of skill can fend us off quite easilyl For another I've found one of the most fun parts of this game is player interaction and naval battling and ♥♥♥♥. Also it's a pirate game, why play a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pirate game if you don't want to get pirated? XD
A lot if good ideas as to why, in this thread. As far as gold is concerned... I personally don't care anymore. I'm here for the l rep and that beautiful ocean.

"Pirated" consists of more sides than just PvP. If you don't like PvP then you are not obligated into participating.
Some people just enjoy the PvE-aspects of the game and some people just enjoy the PvP. If you don't want the loot then there is no point in chasing other people since they're probably the PvE-type of people. If you're just after the loot of other players then you want the PvE-players to enjoy the game, otherwise nobody would deliver you loot.

The funny thing is that the PvP-people gets so offended when PvE-people talk about not participating in PvP.
I also had a bunch of fun wasting the time of sweats chasing me down for the bananas in my barrels. You could have them chase you for at least 30 - 45 minutes just to red sea everything and they got nothing for it. "But you wasted your own time!!!!!" - no, it's an investment, I was saving the time of other PvE-players by wasting the time of the sweat players.

those where noobs chasing you not sweats lmao. if you actually try you can easely beat most people that you encounter, especially when they do a sale/big update. You don't even need to be that good to engage in pvp.

People can easely launch and board runners - there are multiple methods that let you go very very far with good fps. You can quite literaly launch all the way from plunder to FOTD - i highly doubt running will work vs experienced pvp enjoyers that just want to spawn camp you and don't even want your loot.

if you find running vs swabbies fun insted of defending yourself, you do you.
