Brigantine Speed
I know a while back dumb sails were fixed. My impression of that meant that sloops heading against the wind would gain distance from a brigantine when trying to run. I've spent a concerning amount of time running, alone, on a sloop and it seems that every ship type catches up to me, after like a half-hour of running against the wind, brigantines and galleons alike. (more frequently brigantines cause there's more of them) Has anyone else noticed this or am I just doing something wrong?

P.S.
I might be a bit bias, I solo-sloop a lot and am a bit tired of getting sunk, though that's just kind of a problem of solo-slooping.

I face the same issue as you while solo slooping and the only thing that has seemed to help is The Horn of Fair Winds..but it's not easily obtainable. Just got lucky once or twice and ran away from brigs using it on the sails to gain speed. Apart from that getting sunk by them is inevitable ig
Brigs always have and still are OP. You can go into the wind all day, but eventually you run out of map and need to turn. Then you will hear a hail of chainshots. They need to buff sloop speed. It's nonexistent.
Brigs with a good crew can catch almost anything. Depending on how long your going to sail it can be worth doing a few little voyages trying for a horn. I rerolled my pirate when I got back to the game and have been solo slooping a bit. I seem to find a horn every other low level voyage I dive to.
Yeah I feel like the speed changes inadvertently made brigs faster than - or at least on par with - sloops in every situation, including against the wind.

Chasing sloops as a brig feels too easy now, and chasing brigs as a sloop, even dead against the wind, seems fruitless unless the brig makes mistakes with their sails.

I guess it makes the victory feel a bit sweeter when they eventually do run out of map and are forced to fight, so there's that...
Sloops are still faster against the wind. You just have to catch a little bit of wind (just a little). But it doesn't matter. Just chainshot them and sink them (it isn't that hard). Just keep yourself out of their broadside (or big distance). Everyone right now is ussualy a newbie XD.
I find that pirates chasing me like to sail in a straight line directly behind me which makes it pathetically easily to just jump in the water and leave my ship going and wait until they pass over me. Then I can board then and lower their anchor and sink them at best or just waste a lot of their time at worse. Either way this can be a great tactic to buy time for your escape.
Might be just me but i feel only the main sail needs to face the wind to get bonus. The front sail feels like a dummy sail that just gives extra speed.
