Waiting to spawn together was a good strategy, not many people bothers doing that.
The shotgun has been nerfed really bad so it can't oneshot anymore, if you have good food you can eat before they hit you to make sure you heal to avoid the second tap then you can keep eating to heal while they reload and have chances to fight back.
You guys shouldn't have scuttled tho, as you lose nothing and you only get better the more you try, swap weapons etc. If you're really good with throwing knifes you can delete people really fast as that's the fastest weapon in the game so far, you kill with 2 throwable knives. So maybe if you guys keep trying that every time you respawn you will eventually get a lucky double tap and get rid of one of them and get some momentum.
Once they off your ship the best you could do is sail away to reset the fight or escape.
Don't let this guy ruin you, OP. You have the right response to this situation: wanting to get better at the game to win fights in the future. Don't turn into a sore loser who reports people because you refused to use the scuttle option, we can see you are better than that. Keep practicing and find which weapons you like using, it's just all about practice.
So are knives best for below deck, close encounter sloop fights?
Most people won't bother to change weapons depending on the deck they're fighting on as that wastes precious time
Pirates are allowed to kill and sink other pirates.
Pirates are NOT allowed to kill and NOT sink pirates in order to harass them by killing them repeatedly. This is bannable.
I've reported many players who have done this. They will be banned at least temporarily, if not permanently.

Anyway, sometimes I think they should increase the health of the typical skeletons/phantoms - so that killing those will become better practice for killing pirates.
sure not giving up will "improve" your skills but if you keep getting 1-tapped blunder or double gunned, what are you supposed to "improve" from?
that behavior IS considered griefing by RARE and thus is bannable if you're caught on tape and reported
You will rarely find a friendly crew that will help you practice "TDM" as they call it here, as nobody wants to do anything here unless it generates gold. So you gotta use those so called "griefers" as practice to get better at defending yourself against other "griefers".
Just remember giving up won't make you a better player, but trying to keep a cool head during unfair situations makes you an actual gamer.
Changing weapons on the ferry
Trying to use the ship as cover
Jumping overboard
But these two set up on the stairs next to the ammo box. And with both blasting, it was near instant death. Accessing barrels meant death. Blocking with a sword doesn't stop shotgun to the face. The few times we made any forward progress was when we divided their attention. But then it was a literal skill issue.
I appreciate all the responses. Ultimately, I'd like to be able to handle situations like this so practice is my prescription.
All i had to do is spawn, hit them afew times before dying, eventually they ran out of food and i had no more food either so they had no way to heal.
Once i manged to kill one of them the others were easy to get rid of.
tl;dr just deplete everyone's food and be patient you will get a good snowball eventually.
True, though some foul mouthed people kinda deserve it. My crew and i done it once to this kid who kept jumping in the water just to go past our boat at a safe distance when we were chasing his ship and yell the n word.
He just kept yelling the n word over voice chat repeatedly, so we made a decision as a team to jump on board his ship and kill him as many times as possible.
