Report a translation problem
The only way to join a captained ship as a crewmate (and not a captain) is to have your friend captain it and join via friends list. (You can join them, or they can invite you).
If you meet someone cool ingame, they can add you as a friend and start a new session and invite you.
Its theoretically possible to join via open crew but
a.) I wouldnt recommend open crew to my worst enemy
b.) Its a crapshoot that the ship is captained.
If you are in a captained ship and the captain leaves the session, the ship stops being captained and you cant use sovereign.
Had a pretty fun time joining open crews all day yesterday.
The one guy I ended up riding with for a few hours kept inviting his friends who kept going afk (he was kinda guilty of it himself) and would eventually leave and the slot would get filled by a rando, and the randos were more helpful than the dude's friends.
Open crews are a whole vibe, but I highly recommend taking Jon LaJoie's masterclass before hand:
