No way to join a Captained ship?
I wanna join someone else's Brig or Galleon and I can't seem to figure out how to do that.

Yesterday I chartered a brig and joined some randos, but then we had a chartered ship and couldn't use the Sovereign.

Is there a trick I'm missing or something?

unless you use your own, its random chance whether or not you can load into an open crew with someone elses ship being captained or not

The only way to join a captained ship as a crewmate (and not a captain) is to have your friend captain it and join via friends list. (You can join them, or they can invite you).

If you meet someone cool ingame, they can add you as a friend and start a new session and invite you.

Its theoretically possible to join via open crew but
a.) I wouldnt recommend open crew to my worst enemy
b.) Its a crapshoot that the ship is captained.

If you are in a captained ship and the captain leaves the session, the ship stops being captained and you cant use sovereign.

Yea when I chartered one a few times I had about a 33% chance of landing in a captained. (not rigorously tested at all)

Had a pretty fun time joining open crews all day yesterday.

The one guy I ended up riding with for a few hours kept inviting his friends who kept going afk (he was kinda guilty of it himself) and would eventually leave and the slot would get filled by a rando, and the randos were more helpful than the dude's friends.

Open crews are a whole vibe, but I highly recommend taking Jon LaJoie's masterclass before hand:
