Mermaid Gems...

I'm told by several players that selling mermaid gems or siren gems to the vendor that you most want to level up is better than selling to sovereigns. I'm also told that it doesn't matter.

Does anyone know the answer as a fact?

I'm not talking about the gold, it's about the XP earned.

While I'm asking, are there any other items that are better sold at a specific place?

its usually better to hold onto them and sell them to hunters call as that faction as it takes quite a long time to level it up.

as for the 3 main factions (gold hoarder/merchant/order of souls) it comes down to personal opinion if you really want the extra exp or not

Selling them directly to the trading company you want will give you the rep for that faction. Selling to the sovereigns will sell them to the faction whose emissary flag you're currently using. If you're not using an emissary flag, if I remember correctly it'll give the rep to your lowest level of the three main trading companies. (It could just randomise, honestly it's been so long since cared about levels that I forget)

Community weekend in a full galleon in the third jack sparrow tall tale, find the the pond near the singing ghost pirates.
Only cook the golden ones, the others are not worthy to be cooked.
Once the event bonus is maxed go sell them all to either sovereings or a sea post.

Pondies gives less rep than gems, but since you get one every about 30 seconds and they only struggle one time before you can pick them up you keep picking them up nonstop, trophy pondies gives up really quick as well.
