While I find it annoying when my opponent drops sails and runs to repair after only taking two hits, it pushes me to devise better strategies to prevent it from happening.
I don't personally do Hourglass for the curses, but for those who like them it's a fine reward for their efforts.
Having only played the Arena a handful of times before it closed, I have to agree. I played with friends on a galleon, and it was some of the most chaotic fun I'd had (had only been playing a few months then).
Playing on NA servers with 150 ping just made it more special lol
Hourglass just doesn't seem half as entertaining as the Arena was :/
Hourglass has the advantage of needing to matchmake only two ships of opposing factions instead of four and filling each with players. It's also directly integrated inside the main gamemode and has more inviting rewards, both things that strongly push the player to try it.
But the gamemode design is far worse. In Arena, everyone has the same equipment, you wouldn't dive in with more wood or cursed cannonballs, and winning is based on points, combining the damage given, ships sunk and collecing the chests that everyone fights for. Ships would sink rather quickly due to the aggressiveness and multiple crews, but you would respawn, and there was a time limit of 15 minutes.
Overall, more balanced and fun matches full of action.
