No Economy Equals No Endgame
without gold having any value other than for cosmetics and no player economy there is no reason to play the game after you've experienced the pve. the pvp has the same problem. there is no value in any loot we get from sinking other ships. there's no risk or reward when we win or lose in pvp. the game has huge potential but without any endgame it's not worth playing. right now it appeals to new players and those who haven't done all of the content. once they've done it they'll quit because there's nothing left to do unless you think pvp with no risk or reward is fun. add gold value to all items in the game and add maintenance costs. make ships be lost after being sunk repeatedly within a time-frame. make ships cost gold and allow players to have some form of economy. then the game will actually be worth playing long-term.

not every game has to be a forever game. it's ok to stop playing once you've finished the content to the extent that you wanted.

There's already quite a bit of spending to get supplies at the start of every session. The crates, captained supplies, and the repairs to keep the ship looking good.

What you're suggesting will make the game unnecessarily harder for newer players.

I know of "endgame" players focused 100%-ing achievements. So they know all sorts of bilge rat "trivia" about the game. They still play every now and then, for monthly ledgers, or just for fun, or just play with different people. Different team play dynamics and different ways of dealing with the strangers we meet in the seas.

I remember meeting a 10k hour pirate who simply talked my crew into joining them for a SoT shot entry. Yes that's SoT in-game screenshot competition / SoT photography. We didn't win though, sadly. The old pirate was telling us that he's lacking the cosmetics from winning these competitions. Everything else was almost done, even the rare meg. But I think he was around when it was easier to unlock the rare meg thing.

there is a shortage of good games. that's why we want to see games that have great potential be more than they are. SoT is a good example because it has a great core design and gameplay but then loses appeal over time because like i wrote there's no economy so there's no continuous game long-term. if economy was added and hoarding wealth existed then it would have lasting appeal. when someone took a ship into battle they would know that it will need to be repaired and that costs gold and similarly with weapons and everything in the game if it had a gold value. if you lose your gear when you died for example and had to replace it the game would be better. casual games have a place but without risk and reward there is no long-term appeal other than casual gameplay and so the game becomes old and we move on. that's not a good thing. SoT has too much going for it to be abandoned by players. it has a really nice foundation to build on.

losing your gear would kill the game. you'd have a small population of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that would just continuously sink ships whenever they saw them(as some do now) and the people getting sunk would have no way to recover without going and nerfing their gold collection rate in safer seas. it's fine as is, losing a ship because someone sank it on you or a skeleton gallion spawned on your sloop or because people in your guild keep taking it out without you repairing it would suck and would make many people quit.

It might be dead to you but it certainly isn't dead.

Regarding the @OP, there are plenty of people who do play long-term because they enjoy either the pvp, meeting & interacting with new crews, commendation hunting or simply sailing around doing stuff and continuing to enjoy the beautiful graphics.

Yeah no thanks.

Meaningless grind for the easily addicted.

...depends how you play. Personally, I play to meet people on the seas and interact with them....either violently or, more interestingly, for those strange encounters with comedy value. Having a mic helps and being prepared to communicate with people enhances the experience beyond just numbers on a screen. If you like playing games like that then yeah, this game isn't likely going to keep you going....all games are just pixels...it's what you do with the pixels that counts :)

the game was fun to play for a while but there's only so much meaningless pvp that appeals to me. if i'm not gaining resources or losing them and there's no depth or challenge to maintaining my ship or items then the game needs to have superb mechanics to keep me playing. it's ok mechanically but is nowhere near good enough to hold my attention with only the mechanics. the appeal of a pirate game is more than sailing. it's plundering and amassing a horde of wealth and ironically you can't do that in SoT. there's nothing to plunder or lose. gold is only for cosmetics and so basically it doesn't even exist. the sailing is fun but it's not enough on it's own. the pvp has no risk or reward. for example a couple days before i quit i had an open crew with someone and we sunk i think either 4 or 5 ships together and killed the boarders like a ridiculous amount of times without losing our ship and even with all that it really didn't amount to anything. losing a ship means nothing. there's nothing to gain or lose. the loot from the ships didn't matter. the kills didn't matter. we gained nothing for the time spent. the combat isn't that much fun on it's own to keep doing it. if this game had an economy it would be at the top of my list but without one it's not worth playing long-term.

it's fun for a while but once you hit endgame there's nothing left. there's no reason to play.

You will not like this game if this is your attitude with it. I have 2600 hours in this game. It's not the gold, or grinding activities for skins that keeps me playing it. I don't sit there and do something I find tedious and repetitive for hours on end. The guys I play with, we often let gold sink to the ocean so no one gets the haul everyone is fighting over.

The end game is the same as the beginning game. Go out there, bump into other people, sink them, help them, mess with them, do something fun together, get caught up in heists, get caught up in spontaneous server battles.

These adventures are always unique and memorable because every person is different. This IS the game.

It sounds like you've programmed yourself to need progression to have fun. Progression is fun, yes. I loved progressing through raid tiers in WoW. But it's certainly not a requirement of fun.

The game has already proven itself. Its been 6 years and its in the healthiest state its ever been especially now that its on steam and ps5 too. The naval combat in this game has no competition. There is no game out there like seas. Its doing great and I think most of the design decisions the team at Rare have made have only served to improve the game especially the quality of life changes. Cosmetics only is fine.
