Everything on the ship needs to be managed by you - steering, repairing, bailing water, guarding ladders against boarders, firing cannons...
Your ship will be left unguarded while you're busy digging stuff up on islands or doing whatever.
Fighting against anyone other than another solo player will likely see you sent to the bottom of the sea until you've had a lot of PvP practice.
Some people enjoy playing solo, but ultimately it's easier to either play with friends or use the official Discord to find a crew.
once you figure out ship management & sailing basics it is a very enjoyable game even solo.
but you always need to pay attention to other player ships, scan your horizon, check the map often.
when you spot another ship track their movement for a bit, if they are happily going on their own way they are probably doing a mission or something and you are safe. but if they start going in your direction, they want a fight and all your loot XD so prepare to fight or start running away.
you can do all pve missions/activities as solo with no problem. but doing a skeleton fort or a world event is very risky, because those two tend to attract larger more aggressive crews that are actively looking for other players to kill and sink.
if you want to try fighting other players i recommend doing hourglass pvp, it will at least match you against another solo player and you know its a fair 1 on 1 fight.
