Does the combat heavily rely on parrying?
I'm bad at timing parries. With these games I usually just dodge and roll because they have bigger timings, but I suck when I have to like time a parry button to deflect an incoming projectile.

So does it rely too much on parrying?

in story mode difficulty, the parry timing has a huge window, so it's really hard to fail a parry

I've been playing this game on the hardest difficulty and I got to say that parrying is important to learn, but you don't need to master it for some enemies.
For the zeffo tomb guardian enemies, I found the best strategy is to perform hit and runs. Hit them 2-3 times, then dodge roll out of the way.
Meanwhile, for Jotaz you cannot outrun or outroll them and you have to parry or block their attacks.
Even then, I find that parrying one of the Jotaz's attacks then simply blocking the other can have me survive without the block meter hitting 0, preventing a stagger.
However these enemies go down in a few strikes. Bosses *need* you to parry them to survive, because you spend minutes upon minutes in their boss arenas and simply blocking can help, but without parrying every so often you're going to run out of block and be open for attack.
So needless to say, assuming you're playing anything lower than Jedi Grandmaster, parrying isn't required for some enemies but you still need to know to parry. Especially for bosses.

The timing internally is broken on multiple levels (between you hitting a button and your character responding properly) because of engine issues, to the point where skill doesn't matter. Wouldn't even bother with this game.

Try Sekiro Die Twice because that game is 100% parry and more good. I dunno this game parry not really good actually, sometime struggle because parry mechanic this game. Rather parry, I just dodge and hit especially monster type enemies (btw I play in Jedi Grandmaster Difficulty)

I don't think the timing is broken, nor would it be caused by an engine-specific problem. It was deliberately done the way it was. It might not be the best choice, but if they had wanted it to be more traditional (i.e. not tied to animation) they could have.

I'd say parrying is definitely the best method for most combat scenarios. Most of the major boss fights will rely on it to some extent. Proper timing for dodging will also help.

Eh, you can hold block so that you don't get hit by blasters but parrying to reflect them is best if you can manage for crowd control so you don't get interrupted when fending off melee units. On 'Story Mode' parry is pretty much as easy as it's going to get in any game TBH. It's pretty much required for some encounters to be able to do it and if you don't enjoy it maybe it's best to find a different game.

I dunno what that other user is saying about the timing being 'broken'. It works perfectly fine even on my non-gaming laptop as long as you can run the game at the correct FPS.

I also suck at parrying but I think it's managable at normal difficulty (Jedi Knight). Just don't be discouraged at the beginning, the first few hours can be tough and nerve-wracking but you will get the hang of it eventually. And as the others said there is also a Story Mode if you get too frustrated.

parrying in this game broken af at higher difficulties. seems that was poorly planned implementation of the system

I'm over 60 years old, so my twitch response and fine motor control are NOT what they used to be! If you end up not having enough time to parry correctly, do like I did and adjust the difficulty of the game - which gives more time to parry. KEEP IN MIND that you may need to do this in the beginning of the game while you're getting the hang of it - but, of course, you can (and like myself - did) turn the difficulty back up to fully enjoy the gameplay. It's really quite fun!

Even on Grand Master the parrying is still fine and completely reliable.

i would certainly say so. i suppose you could continue dodging and wait for an opportunity to strike but you will get the hang of the parrying mechanic sooner or later. being the masochist i am i like my first playthrough of a game to be on the hardest difficulty available with the exception of baldurs gate 3. i have died several times but more than half of those were due to me trying to clear a gap i thought i could clear. in short i recommend you continue putting effort into parrying regardless of how frustrating it will be at first
