While I did figure it out myself eventually, I still felt stupid when I did so, as the game literally shows you that a short time before that, that not only can the torches burn the vine growths, but also that they are affected by the gravity device fields.
I guess that is one of the more tricky ones to figure out if you don't pay enough attention to the environment and what the game wants to teach you, by showing you examples of what you need to solve follow up puzzles.
I did, it's a targeting bug
I miss the days of actual puzzle design where you can *tell* the problem and what needed doing to fix it.
