Also - there are skill upgrades that make it an even better area weapon (for example, the R2+R2 attack). And finally, there's skill unlocks (both purchased in the skill tree and later on unlocked through the story) that will give it (and the single blade) more tricks to its sleeve.
I found myself using exclusively the single blade for a good part of the game, until I unlocked those, then I found myself switching between both mid-combat quite regularly!
