A lot of people that are fans of starwars today are not fan because of the 8 very average movies that were released. They are fan because of the universe developed by the books and the video games.
Disney basically shot itself when they closed lucas art and decided to give exclusivity contract to EA.
They thought the movies were enough by themselve to bring new people into the franchise. No they are not. They dont bring much to the lore in fact. Mos tof things people want to see are based on video games or book stories.
Yeah, it's kinda really cheesy. Used to love them as a kid though, but now only nostalgia powers me through them, because besides the at the time technological spectacle... It's kinda not that good. And new trilogy makes it look no different than other generic sci fi movies. That's the thing, star wars strong side was always that there is nothing like it. So far I liked Rogue One the most and I liked it exactly because it was least like Star Wars and didn't had space wizards to save the day.
Nah, the first 3 movies are decent. They're not masterpieces by any means but they don't suck

Star wars died back in 1999. George became too powerful and just had a bunch of yes men around him, but without the old team his flaws were obvious in both writing and directing. Episode 1 was a disaster, after all the hype and talk of how George had this mega plan of how it all works.
Some fans bash Disney for using Star Wars as a cash cow, it always was from day one. George wanted it to be a long commercial of characters and products he could sell.
