Jaro Tapal - why does he mock Cal?

Not sure I follow the story at this point: Cal meets Jaro in a seeming vision to 'fight', but Jaro is nasty to him in a vile, verbal way. Yet at the very end of the last one he then walks away as if out of respect for Cal that ends up being a great encouragement.

So what I don't get:

So was this really the 'spirit' of Jaro? If so why was he viciously nasty?

If not and it was just a mental attack from the place he was in, faking it being his old master to try to make him feel guilty for his death, then why at the end does Jaro act respectful towards Cal as if he passed some sort of test since it was a fake vision meant to confuse Cal?
