If you think there are only a dozen games from the last 20 years that let you play as a female then boy oh boy you got a lot of learning to do.
If you want more games with female leads then 2 things need to happen, More women actually need to show interest in game design which not many really do compared to how many men show interest, And games need to be written with the main protagonist as female BUT that don't revolve around gender, This whole identity politics crusade that started a few years ago has quickly turned rancid, My fiance makes a face that could kill when she hears some white knight screech "We need more women in video games", Why does she cringe ? Because it is cringe worthy, Women in gaming is getting there of its own accord, We don't need virtue signallers looking for a pat on the back to point various things out, Let it happen on it's own, And it will.
Guess you missed the last 3 big Star Wars movies with Daisy Ridley as the main character learning to be a Jedi/force user.....
Here are some amazing games that let you play as anything you want, Female Jedi, Alien female Jedi, Your pick -
Star Wars Knights of the old Republic 1
Star Wars Knights of the old Republic 2
Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy
Star Wars The Old Republic MMO
You can be a custom made female Jedi in any one of those the latter of which is updated every few weeks and months with new content and going by current info there's an actual Star Wars RPG in the works **Remember Fallen Order technically isn't an RPG** which will likely let you make your own custom character.
Im talking about large, AAA games that most people will actually play. The tomb raider reboot, mirrors edge, horizon zero dawn, alien isolation, dishonored 2, resident evil. Games that have both gender or female only protagonists that are character driven (rather then plot driven like most create your own character type of games). Having more of those is a good thing.
Most importantly for this specific game, having the dual gender protagonist ala dishonored 2 or resident evil 2 would actually make the game better. The inclusive aspect of it would just be a bonus.
The video game industry is only moving towards being more inclusive to women because people are asking for it (plus financial reasons as well obviously). There’s a reason video games were seen as only for men through most of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
Most changes in culture aren’t organic, they require a catalyst of some kind. People didn’t wake up one day and say slavery is bad. It took decades of social pressure and in many places armed conflict. Same with women being allowed to vote.
I love when people bring up “my girlfriend\ the girls I know hate white knighting” as if anecdotes like that have any real weight.
Finally, virtue signaling to who? Lol this is an anonymous forum. How would I benefit from that? It’s called an opinion.
But how many single player character-driven games have ur mum as their protagonist? See, saying stupid things is easy!
Why the private profile, snowflake?
The whole point of the argument is that the protagonist should be female because women are underrepresented in videogames. But male redheads, or gingers, are also incredibly underrepresented and have actually become very misrepresented in recent years.
Sigh. Redheads aren’t discriminated against. How can you misrepresent a ginger exactly? Being a man or woman is a defining aspect of who you are. It’s the same with race. Being a redhead is not in the same category lol
Women are half the population yet they are consistently under represented in films and video games. Redheaded men still make comparable money to other men, not 30% less for doing the same job like women.
I think quite a few of you need to ask yourselves “why does this bother me so much?” If your answer includes “SJW” or “political correctness” you need to delve a little deeper.
I question why you’d target this game specifically.
I’m all for equal representation and closing wage gaps. But that representation needs to be done smartly and naturally.
Arguing about a game after the fact that had a clear reasoning behind the choices it made is just pointless. Especially when said game has several strong female characters in it.
Target is too strong a word, it’s still a good game and the developers have every right to make whatever story they wish. I just consider it a missed opportunity.
Also, I’ve been gaming since the mid 90s and it sucks to see our culture turn so insular and toxic. I try to do what little I can to change that.
Hell, even the sequel trilogy has a female lead...
