This.
when an enemy flashes red his attack is unblockable and you better dodge out of the way however if you dodge too early the enemy wil adjust and hit you anyway.
parry is all about timing too, dont hit block as soon as the enemy lifts his weapon, let it travel a little towards you first, play with the timing until you get it right.you can parry the animals too of course but the easiest to practice on would be the baton troopers.
parrying blaster fire back at the shooter is good practice too.
dont spam the block button it wont do anything, either hold it constantly or press once at the right time for a parry.
Blocking - simply holding your block key down when an attack would land. Long as it isn't a power attack (enemy glows red) and your guard isn't low/empty (bottom middle of the screen, white bar) then you'll block the attack, usually from any angle/direction.
Parry - Timing your block to right before the enemy attack lands. Breaks their guard very well and usually gives you free hits. Harder to pull off and you get nailed if you messed it up. High risk, high reward.
Dodging - rolling to the side or away. Generally, attacks that lunge towards you, go to the side. Against melee weapon swings, go backwards/away.
Matrix Style Dodge - there is a skill that lets you tap your dodge key and Cal will lean his torso away from attacks and if you get the timing down, it's pretty amazing and replenishes your force pool and sometimes results in surprised and funny remarks from the enemy.
I think the parrying mechanic sucks terribly and the timing is awkward and changes a lot between enemies. Sometimes it doesn't seem to work even against the more simple enemies, like it's inconsistent. Unless you get good at it, you'll just take extra damage.
I'm towards the end of the game and I was struggling early on, but once I started saying screw the parrying (blocking is still okay) around the mid game and just started dodging, I started doing a lot better. Once you get a good feel for the dodging and upgrade your lightsaber skills, I noticed the biggest improvement by changing to highly aggressive style backed up by dodges and rolls. Even most bosses seemed to struggle against it. Cal is faster to attack than most enemies, waiting for them to begin swinging their weapon at you, then instead of blocking immediately attack and odds are you'll whack them before they whack you and you'll interrupt their attack. This depends on the enemy of course, but it does often work.
If you feel you're struggling, focus on getting survival skills that boost your health and stims, and look for the bonus stim boxes, it makes a huge difference. Other than that, spend a good deal of time with a single melee enemy and practice your defense without attacking them. Storm Trooper Commanders and melee Purge Troopers are great practice. Find one near a save and set aside some time to train on them. Once you unlock and upgrade them, push and pull can interrupt enemy heavy attacks and leave them exposed.
For parry its not enough to tap the button, you need to hold it till parry animation starts.
HOLD back/down to block almost anything.
Only things that can damage you are:
- overheads (simplified version, attacks from air)
- throws
So by default crounch block, unless you see enemy being in air (can be minimal, look if their feet touch the ground) is witch case hold back to standing block. If you see em going for grab, punch/jump. If you see em trying to do dragon rush, do the same to tech out of it.
Thats about all there is to it, everything else is just practice and knowing characters (if you know moves you know witch ones are overheads or throws).
Also, be careful of mixups (enemy changing sides by teleporting/jumping over you).
