how do you unlock characters without paying? i want senja

i was uninterested in this game until i saw senja so i bought the base game. but i dont see her anywhere. please dont tell me i have to open my wallet again.

First, you need to enter the game.

once you get further into the story it let's you "craft" the characters

Wallet or enough playtime to unlock another character. Haven't gotten that far yet myself, but people on youtube are saying 25ish hours into the game before you can unlock a 2nd character.

That is mostly because you have to get to the dungeon that drops the material for that character

Just focus on completing the story and unlocking the majority of bosses i'd say. Characters apart from the 3 you can choose from at the start require some bosses that are deeper into the game. Not all are tied to dungeons either, a couple are in the open zone, think the that fire elemental dude in the open zone is one and another is in a cave where a quest leads you.

I know that the slime boss drops Win's Courage. I was told that The First and...crap. I forgot the name. The bottom middle boss drops the other two.
I've killed that one four times now and haven't seen it yet. And I'm one or two quests from unlocking The First.

We call senja for senja, to craft her you need item 1, 2 and 3, which you can craft from specific materials of dungeon drops, but in case of characters requires "spirit of senja" i think they are called, which is also a specific dungeon drop.

so its a matter of figuring out what you want and going for the pieces for it.

Since the Echoes Patch, everything is now much more easier to attain.

Silo, Wingrave, and Niss - finish the tutorial

Senja - Clearing the Deceiver Event a few times

Kyros - Clearing that Gloom Cube a few times (I think)

Venomess - Defeat Night Maw

Grendel - Defeat Bloodspawn

You should get them unlocked just following MSQ as well as a Mount unlock as well.
