Meh, anyone else underwhelmed?
I played it on switch. Gameplay was solid but in the end just feels like a kinda casual armored core game. I also thought the plot and all characters were kind of dopey and I actually like anime. Setting had potential but I feel like they never really went anywhere with it. I will admit that I skipped almost all of the more detailed exposition that happens in all the stupid emails you get ingame.

No one cared about the story, so no. The added content released has made most think fondly of the game.

Also, "casual Armored Core" isn't much of an insult when most of the competition can't even live up to that low bar. None of the mech games out there for PC are that detailed. If they are, they usually suffer from shallow content.

Well that is a fair point. My problem is it did not slake my thirst for a new AC game, only renewed it, while also not measuring up to that admittedly high bar. And yah there isn't much competition in mech action games. Mech strategy games however are in a cool place with Battletech now and Phoenix Brigade coming. Also if MW5 ever updated to have melee attacks it would be the best mech game. But this is Japanese mecha we are supposed to be talking about so I guess its kind of apples and oranges. What with anything mechwarrior being big stompy western bots and not that comparable to Japanese bots that can booster skate. Damnit I want a new AC game, or just good mech action game. Why did front mission evolved have to suck? DXM was good and all, but it just wasn't any AC that's for sure.
I was actually so hyped to get this game on my switch (which i rarely touch) but didn't since it got such middling reviews. At least on steam I could potentially not pay full price for it during one of the many yearly sales. I thought the demo was kinda fun...didn't expect to see it come to PC at all for some reason.

Another one comes to mind, project nimbus. I almost feel like project nimbus did a better job of what this was trying to do. But then that one has kind of ace combat vibes and I always had a soft spot for the strangereal ace combat games. This one has very fromsoft AC vibes but somehow falls just short. Would have been better with heat mechanics. Also I know nobody cares about story but man it has been some time since I played even a JRPG with such cheesy characters. Some of these goons are just such 1 dimensional anime tropes that never get fleshed out beyond being just a trope. The old AC games had very basic stories with minimal characters and were almost better off for it imo. The newer ones like "For Answer" less so but that actually was decent and less cheesy than this.

This would be me if I hadn't already got my fill of it on switch tho.

I didn't buy it on the Switch, and it's exactly the kind of game I want, also it's cheaper on Steam

It's a win for me.

That's a somewhat questionable reason to avoid the game, seeing as Armored Core consistently gets middling reviews as well.
These sorts of games have never reviewed as well as they should in the west.
Main negative seen in reviews was the samey missions over and over again. It didn't offer much variety. Apparently the content updates made the game a bit better.

Played it on the Switch and yeah underwhelming is fitting along with making me want a real AC game. From the awful story and characters that break up the action, the missions that make some of ACs destroy the tanks and MTs mission seem interesting, the rather boring and at times annoying loot drop system coupled with how the shop works it did end up being rather disappointing. I would honestly say for people to wait for a much bigger sale and don't give into the thirst so soon.

I only watched playthroughs as I have no switch and it definitely feels more catered towards casual play. Like instead of catering to hardcore fans they try to get new fans in. The customization is more like Front Mission's, which I don't think is a very good choice when you are only customizing one (active use) unit instead of like 6 units.

I still think this is worth my money though, and so I bought it. Didn't live up to my initial expectations, but it's not exactly bad, and different enough from AC.

It's okay. Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun game. Not worth the full 50€ Steam wants for it though. Maybe wait for a sale.

I for one blame Dark Souls. I want my robots back

But I love Dark Souls too. Still, we are long overdue for a new AC game.
Yea the game was really underwhelming.

I looked forward to it, in a "scratching that mecha itch" and "mission based gameplay could be like the Battle Universe franchise on PSP" way. But it disappointed in both ways. It wasn't as deep as an AC game, and wasn't as good as the arcade Gundam PSP games.

Awfully mediocre with weird design decisions, cluttered UI, a terrible story and worse cliché characters.

I'm not surprised it bombed. I hope it sells well enough for them to have a second try though. Not many new mech games out these days. Maybe FROM will remember that they own the AC IP tho, who knows?
