Co-op is a blast too, you can jump into it anytime regardless of story progress. There's co-op against stronger versions of the Story bosses, as well as unique bosses or variants unique to co-op. They also have a chance to drop special parts/weapons exclusive to the mode.
There's also co-op against factions from the story; Western VII, Innocence, and the like. You basically go up against the whole squad (size varies on each faction) which is useful for if you didn't get a specific part from a specific character in story that you wanted (can't replay story missions until you beat the story once) as well for if you wanted a specific character's voice from taking them down.
Then there's the recent addition; Exploration. Basically you get a randomly generated dungeon to run through using the Underground Labyrinth map as a basis. Each room and layout is different each run, as well as the bosses and drops. You get a short run for it, or a larger map run with chances at rarer stuff. Exploration also added new mech parts/weapons that are exclusive to this mode. It's also handy for stocking up on stuff you don't even have unlocked yet if you're early in the story.
All of this can be played online, or offline with AI bots that you can pick out from.
And on PC with Skype/Discord/Teamspeak/etc. this is much less of a concern than it is for Switch players. So that's probably not going to hold people back as much on PC as it does on the original version.
The frustration of being downed and having to manually type out on the Switch keypad "REVIVE ME ALREADY" multiple times while the team runs circles around you blatantly ignoring you....isn't the best feeling lol. But again, that's mainly just an issue with that specific version
