Don't get me wrong, way back when I first started playing I thought Phyllis would teach it too. But somewhere along the way they made Phyllis the Spirit Magic teacher and I figure they aren't going to have her give two different class/skills.
I assume Shapeshifting will be learned much the way it is learned in the Blackthorn Arena game, meaning the "northmen"(AKA Viking faction) will give you a quest to learn it.
They had not yet been added prior to 1.5. I don't know yet if they've been added after 1.5. I'm still exploring myself.
That being said, technically with save editing you COULD give yourself Shapeshifting and it's fully functional. The mechanics are all present in the game and have been since way before 1.5
But the quest to learn it officially is not in the game yet, to the best of my current knowledge. If I come across it while exploring i'll pop back over here and update.
For what it's worth Battle Monk is better, especially if you're a Melee-oriented Mage. The passive effect on Battlemonk allows Willpower and Intelligence to enhance your physical attack speed and damage. And the Unarmed Techniques in general are pretty strong.
The Sword techniq is pretty strong for One-Handed and OneHand/Buckler fighters though.
As far as i can tell there's no way to get both classes unlocked without save editing BUT...the Yuan Lan girl does not seem mad at you for siding against her and says she hopes to meet you again so...MAYBE you can meet her again in the future and get her to give you the technique then.
But if you side with her to get her sword technique the Monks won't deal with you at all anymore. You can't learn their class or buy their Monk-style armor/weapons from their shop anymore. So overall it's a much better deal to side with the monks.
There's also a class based on Chinese Spear techniques, but I don't know if players can learn it or not. It exists over in Blackthorn Arena, but even in BtA only one Companion character knows the class technique. I never got a quest option for anyone else to learn it without save editing.
Since this game uses the same engine as Blackthorn Arena I assume the mechanics for that class are functional in this game too, and could probably be added with save editing but I don't know any other way as of yet.
I don't know if that's intended or a bug. Before 1.5 anyone could learn Battle Monk. In BtA anyone can learn Battle Monk.
Now only Mages can. It sort of makes sense since the class seems almost designed to perfectly synergize with mages and allow Mages to become frontline fighters, but it's a very drastic change from the old build and BtA
