Also handy for times when the interact prompt will ♥♥♥♥ with you. like trying to collect jetpack or air tanks and it will not want to collect it because you are too full. or the infamous interact prompt glitch bug.
This is not your fault, you are just having to deal with a longstanding quirk of the game they never really sorted out that us old hands are desensitized to.
There is a long standing glitch with pickups. If you switch to your cutter, and go between beam and cross cutter then back you should be able to pick items up again
1) Grapple coolant canister with left click to detach it.
2) Hold right click to pull the canister to you.
3) Release both left and right mouse buttons to let the canister float near you.
4) Press F to grab the canister (because push is not on F anymore, it won't get blasted).
IMO, they should just let users "pickup" the canisters like they do with O2 canisters and posters as it was before.
Hey so with coolant canisters you have to detach them before you can pick them up. the "pickup" prompt you're seeing actually refers to the type of salvage it is (pickup/barge/processor/furnace) rather than telling you they can be picked up right there
Same goes for posters (try it!) and obviously fuses
repair kits, O2 tanks, and fuel tanks can be picked up regardless of whether they're attached or free floating
Again, the conflict is:
a) you must used the grabber to detach the canisters which by default has F assigned to push
b) you must grab the canisters via F
It's basically playing Russian Roulette on what's going to happen when you push F (push or grab). That's fundamentally the bug.
There are so many old EA bugs that I can barely keep track of them all. but I THINK you used to be able to take them directly out of the ECU, but that caused the status of the ECU to glitch out and not count as drained, or some other jank that the workaround was "only remove it via grapple before collecting." WhyBugFixWhatYouCanRemove.txt style. (There also used to be keys related to fuel venting! That is what the little computer in front of thrusters used to be for. That was buggy as ♥♥♥♥ in many cases. Keys removed. so now we just skip straight to the release handle).
I got used to saying ♥♥♥♥ it and grappling them from half a foot away and never went back. I am so jaded by this that if they ever put back the ability to just directly collect them without grapple first without me noticing I am too muscle memory trained to even attempt. But considering how tiny they are, AND the fact you can pocket them anyways, you are not unreasonable to assume this should not be acting so wacky.
Add an extra step of very awkwardly making sure to stop reeling them in, pausing for a moment, then letting of the beam to switch to the cutter to deny the game the chance to go "LOL u meant force blast right?" when the canister is basically inside your helmet.
Then when it still does not let you pick up the canister which is displaying as perfectly intact (because if it was broken it would be spraying coolant all over your face, hard to miss), throw up your hands and shrug when someone tries to blame user error anyways. At least they are worth basically ♥♥♥♥ all and the important part of an ECU is just getting rid of them, period. But yeesh.
Bonus: Imagine if we could take them back out of our pockets.
"Don't worry, I can just use cryo to deal with this problem. I have three of them in my back pocket... Oh, right. Pockets are a one way hole into the phantom zone." Hey so called realism lovers, get on that.
Mildly related: Fuses. It might feel smart to place your hand on top of the fuse so you can keep it from floating away into the distance to collect after you disarm it. But sometimes the physics engine gets excited and Z key gripping the fuse as you release it will launch you like crazy, so best not to risk that.
If they trip, you reset them by flipping the lever.
If the lever ejects a replaceable object, that object is a fuse. (See US Patent 5052952.)
Anyway, I agree that having F do both force push and grab objects is a bad combination. Consider rebinding one of them to another key. I used slash '/'....
