Temporary Unity Crash Fix

Greetings Cutters,

Since release Version 0.4.1, we've begun receiving rare reports of a very specific crash related to mixed monitor resolutions on multi-monitor setups. This crash occurs immediately upon launching the Game, at which point the Unity crash dialog will appear briefly before disappearing, without the game ever launching.

Because these crashes are caused by an engine issue, we are currently unable to patch in a fix for it, however we have found a temporary solution that can help. The temporary fix is a set of manual steps, or a batch file that will automatically execute those steps, either of which will resolve the issue.

If you’d like to try this temporary fix, please join our official {LINK FJERNET}Discord.gg/shipbreakergame and contact any one of the community moderators with the role “Lynx Performance Monitors” to assist you.

Things to note:
- This crash is extremely rare. If you are not experiencing it no action is required
- This crash does not seem to happen when your secondary monitor is of equal, or lesser resolution than your primary monitor
- Attempting to modify settings via the game's config file has no effect, because this crash occurs before any of our code begins executing

How does it work?
The fix requires forcing a registry key on the computer back to a default value, which will allow the game to launch normally on your primary screen. (If you don't know what the Windows Registry is, it's a giant key store with a ton of information in it that programs use to run.)

For the automatic method, you will be instructed to download and run the ‘ fix_resolution_crash.bat ‘ file provided to you. We highly recommend you use this method, as manually modifying the registry is not without risk. However, we also respect that not everyone wants to run a .bat file and would prefer to make the changes manually. Upon running the .bat file, and once the correct registry key is found and displayed, the moderator will confirm with you that the key is correct and the process should complete successfully.


Manual Fix
The moderator on Discord who will be assisting you can also provide the set of manual steps (with lots of pictures) that you can do at your own pace and discretion if you prefer. There is a prompt within the batch file that confirms the key that you will be modifying, so you can abort the process if something doesn't look right. The batch file is also viewable and editable by anyone who downloads it, so concerned users can just read the file if they want to know exactly what it's going to do to their computer.

i find that setting all my monitors to 1280 by 720 in the windows settings menu fixes the launch issue as well

While the 720p resolution pairing does allow the game to load, I did not invest in a 165Mhz gaming monitor and a 32" ultrawide to game at 720p. This issue needs to be addressed and corrected.

FYI, I'm not sure if this was the same thing or not, but I launched the game and nothing happened for over a minute. I pulled up task manager and saw the unity crash handler running.
After finding this thread, I just killed that task and the game launched in 5 seconds or so.

For the record, I only have 1 monitor and don't have my VR headset connected at the moment, but it's possible the "multi-monitor" part of this issue could have seen that I did have another screen at some point.

I'm just getting a black screen, when I hit the play button I get the ship-breaker screen then the warning screen about the flashing lights then it just a black screen, I can see and move my mouse pointer and hear the sound of the menu that it. I not getting a crash report. I'm only using one screen. Any tips? thanks

Me as well. I have 2x same-resolution monitors @ 1080p, am running Windows 7, and use a 5700xt card with the latest drivers. I do have a Vive HMD, but the link box is powered off so it does not register as connected.

ok, i confess and tried something else, what worked for me now:

it was a solution from an old thread from december 2020. go to config.ini and edit:

[General]
SkipSplashScreen=true
ShowFPS=false

this skips the completely intro and goes directly to the menue

meanwhile there exists another solution, working for me and others:
when ur black screen appears hit the space bar a few times. worked for me either, same as the edit of the config file. give it a try, discord didnt help me, because i kept hanging in the activation procedure of their channel.

Thank you for your reply cutter, the issue here is that the game fails to start and I'm presented with a Unity Crash Handler that looks like this https://ibb.co/b64cszh

EDIT: Sheer force of will is an amazing thing.
In order to fix this, and if anyone reading this has a BIG (42 or bigger) screen, you'll have to locate the exe file, right click, go to properties, compatibility, change High DPI settings and click BOTH checkboxes, so that the APP decides how to handle the big boy screen.

uh, this is a new one :D as i remember right, unity errors come from the unreal engine itself, but not sure...

it's an amazing game, with still some issues. but i look positive in its future.
