EDIT: Gosh, that sounded unfriendly. What I mean by the above is simply that I would play a MP game to kill the other players at random. I certainly wish you no ill will here in the real(ish) world.
It could have a couple different modes.
1. Two yards adjacent and a player-impassable barrier but not object impassable. Here, bro, have a fuel tank and leaking coolant canister!
2. One yard but where the two sides correspond to each player's personal salvage and it's a scramble to snag the best stuff. Oh? I thought you wanted a hunk of keel to the face? Sharing is caring.
But that could be compelling too.
Landing the reactor would devolve into a who can shoot the most tethers the best/quickest mostly, but whoever shot the other with a fuel can might pull it off too.
It could also have slightly altered mechanics like the reactor being worth less.
Less co-op and more on the competitive side would be two bays across from one another separated by a player-but-not-object impassable barrier. Only your barge is on their side and vice versa. No furnaces/salvage. All barge. Break stuff fast so it comes in hot? Or try to move massive bulk? A bit of both along with flinging some "happy fun time bits" more directly at their ship?
