Open Shift and Key Binding
Hello Cutters!

A few weeks ago, we communicated a message regarding the shift timer feedback. While LYNX wants to keep you working at maximum efficiency, we at BBI understand that different people will have different play styles and might prefer a low-pressure approach to shipbreaking.

Let us introduce to you, the Open Shift license in career mode.

Open Shift mode appears as one of the 4 difficulty options when starting a Career license, it is set to the left of the current Standard mode and will be immediately accessible if you have already created a player profile.

{LINK REMOVED}

In this mode:
  • Players’ shifts NEVER end unless they enter the HAB.
  • The timer at the top will count up instead of down for Players to keep personal track of their playtime.
  • Players’ O2 will not drain, unless the helmet has been cracked.
  • It will have its own separate Leaderboard.

Beyond these differences, Open Shift mode will have all the same progression features as Standard mode.

Another piece of feedback we have been hearing is players would love to have greater freedom to customize their controls. Adding Key Remapping has always been a “key” part of our Roadmap however based on your feedback we wanted to get some form of keyboard key rebinding in your hands as quickly as possible. To that end we will also be adding the ability to manually remap keys through the Hardspace: Shipbreaker user_config.ini file in this update. By editing entries in this file you will be able to rebind any keyboard command to a new key as desired.

A fully implemented key rebinding system using the in-game options menu is in the works for future update, and will be followed later with addition of Gamepad rebinding options further down the road.

Thank you all so much for your feedback, we hope you will enjoy this update!

[EDIT] This update is now live! See the Patch Notes here:

You had to ruin the option with the Open shift by removing the one thing that made the game a bit more fun and challenging, by removing the O2 drain.

*sigh* Okay i'm done, deleting game, and not being dramatic, but this game is boring already.
Was hoping that if they did the timer stuff they would not mess it up, AND they did.

And there is still gonna be a while before we get any new ships, sooo... gonna make space for a few older games i have yet to finish, that i do want to finish.

2.5/5 game and update...

I'm just one person, but all i wanted was to "rip and tear" (so to speak) ships apart with what everything Normal mode has, with the exception of a friggin timer.
It was just the timer that had to go... out, gone, shooo...

*sigh*
Oh well... does not matter, i'll be back to this game in, hmm, 6+ months from now...
Maybe then this game will be... better...

I am so excited to see the option to no longer have to worry about the timer. The removal of Oxygen maintenance was a surprise and is unnecessary. Balancing resources makes sense for basic career progression (Freeplay is available to remove those limitations). But why would Lynx care about my time in any way? If anything, wouldn't they want to get the MOST out of the investment? I'll take no limit + no oxygen mgmt. over the required 15 minutes any day though.

Awesome! Now we just need a slot between "Open Shift" and Standard" that still has O2 drain.

Nothing is free. Lynx charges you rental fees and interest per unit of time, and that unit of time is a 15 minute shift. Letting you work longer and foregoing the rental fees is not in their interest.

Thank you kindly for the manual key rebinding! It's a great compromise between speed to deliver the feature for those who will find immense quality of experience improvements from it, and the developer time and attention an in-game rebinding menu will require in the future.

I'm interested in the open-shift option, though I'm not sure I see why remove the O2 requirement -- it seems to be treading too close to open play, if you do. I'm also curious as to whether rental fees and such will be pro-rated for the shift time you take; perhaps doing so would remove the need for a separate leaderboard?

Seconding the ideas above for a barge cycle, probably useful in any case.

I'm going to echo several others in that I would continue to have O2 drain. Gives you a small sense of time passage, makes upgrades worthwhile, and actually provides a reason to *gasp* work in pressurized sections for extended periods, which I think is an interesting gameplay choice.

Just add new barge to the Jack purchase screen. Charge 10k or whatever to clear the barge and just have it happen while you are in the menu so there is no need for animations or anything.

Great idea! A pet peeve (frustration) of mine is watching a perfectly salvaged computer console smash into something on the barge or refuse to embed and just skitter across to the edge of the barge only to disappear or reduce itself to scrap!:steamhappy:

With this update, I now believe the Devs are interested in everyone enjoying their game.
I will be purchasing it asap!

I can only speak for my self, i don't want less of challenge i just don't want to speed run. Make us buy the ships for a random % of its worth and no time limit. Thank you for listening to the community!

The idea of a zero time limited mode makes sense but it should not offer the same level of points and rewards as the other modes. This is effectively "Super Easy Mode" so I should get less rewards for completing ship breaks in that mode. Oxygen, like most, I think should be left on as depleting - you need to go back to the kiosk for tethers anyway and it doesn't stop the game as such really anyway.

Fantastic fun game though, spent so many hours playing it since I bought it and looking forward to seeing what else comes over the next year!

Thank you for this addition!
The O2 removal was a surprise, I don't know who was advocating for that, especially since we still need to manage repairs and tethers. All of that is done in the same place, buying the O2 was not a huge problem, but I did think the 10 minutes of O2 was a bit short.
So in balance I will take it all as is, and happy to also see a key remapping system!

I will be playing in Open Shift when I buy the game again!

This is probably the best answer to the timer, it allows people to be rid of the thing they felt was most stressful and still keeps the normal gameplay the same. 5/5 nice job. But i do think that the oxygen should have stayed the same.

Seriously ...
I feel like some forgot something : It's a FOURTH mode.
You could still go for the three others modes with O² and timer.
You have the choice !
The best the developers could go is leaving a "custom" game where you choose. :)
But hey, it's not even a full month out ! ^^

I agree with this, for those wanting to be more cost effective and not waste time, using all tethers between oxygen trips would be a must, but also using then in a way that makes most sense, to open up areas where you can remove and scrap things without tethers while waiting to go back and get more.

Love the addition but pls add oxygen as an option to toggle on and off for that game mode.

Its refreshing to see a developer actually listen to its player base and make calculated changes to open the game up. I'm excited for the Open Shift change. I can take my time and complete a ship and still run the risk of damage and death unlike Free Play. The lack O2 drain is a bit of a surprise but when you think about the fact IRL the EVAs done on ISS are typically between 4-8 hours, not having to run back to the Hab every 5 minutes makes more sense.
