You use them for Gecko's rated "Hard" or higher. On those ships, the thruster is hooked up to a fuel line, and there's a control panel in the room (a big ass computer terminal directly below the reactor). The utility key is used on that control panel to turn off the fuel to the thruster from the fuel line.

some reactors have a utility console that has a key slot on them, using the key with them makes extracting the reactor far safer.

Related question: If you fail to place the key, you are forced to use the manual release on each thruster of the Gecko, and when you do that, a purple (I don't even know if it is gas or a flame) substance may come out of the pipe.
Is that sustance supposed to damage objects? Because it was spitting directly at one of the thrusters but didn't damaged it even a little.

im not entirely sure on this so someone correct me if im wrong, but i think thats just a indicator that the fuel line is ruptured. and for me that just seems to mean its super fragile and explosive now.

I think so but you can go to the fuel tanks and flush the fuel. this should stop it

I think it is a flame unless it is also possible to just leak without igniting, which sometimes died down after a little bit with no bad result and others blew up half the back end of the ship. So if it does leak after manual release i would recommend getting some distance till you can tell if it is safe even if it doesn't always blow up on you

Thanks for the explanation. :)
But from now on, I will always try to do the key in the first place. It was my first Gecko, and I left the key for the end because the reactor control room was the only room that I left pressurized by mistake and I was scared that if I cut onto it it would damage the reactor and KABLOOIE. But leaving it for the end made me disconnect first a lot of stuff, and the computer ran out of power so I couldn't use the key.

How do you get more utility keys is my main question, cant buy them, so assuming finding them is the only way.
but even if that is the case and you dont have a key, is there a "safe" way to take out the reactor without blowing up the entire thing.

The safest way to deal with the fuel is to use a key on the terminal. The keys are universal, so if you find some and don't use them for whatever reason, save them up so you can use them when you just cannot find the key anywhere in the ship. I -think- that every gecko ship has a key and its just a matter of finding them, but I can't be certain. They are sometimes in the worst places, so an upgraded scanner set to Object mode is very helpful.

The next "safest" option is to vent, but you should remove the fuel pods that are near. I opened one of the valves to vent the fuel and it blew the entire back of the ship off. Miraculously I survived because I backed off quickly, not wanting to get caught in the fuel/fire jet.. I find that I only have to vent two of the lines, as the third is empty. Not sure if this is a bug or feature.

In my experience not using the key makes flames come out of the connector for a while and unless you stand in them (theres a delay before they appear after hitting the switch so you can easily get away) or in my case there were unconnected fuel barrels at the back wall where the engines are and the flames can hit those and blow up. But after I removed the barrels I got vent all 3 engines without the flames doing anything bad at all, you just have to be aware of the surroundings. The only thing I dislike about the keys is that once I got to the gecko I had so many keys already from class 2 and 3 ships that it was basically a given to have them so I currently go for 1 gecko with key 1 without just for the change of pace...that being said I only did one without the key so far and the game crashed and reset my progress before I could try to remove everything safely so all I got out so far in connection with the reactor were the 3 engines

oh yeh i tried doing that , but the purple flames just kept on going on and it was wasting time, so i decided to just .. "cut" the line. hilarious mistake though, blew up everything all 3 thursters exploded, reactor exploded, rest of the ship got blown all the way next to the home
