Is this set in the homeworld universe and part of homeworld lore or not?
Curious. Because I thought homeworld shipbreakers became homeworld deserts of kharak.

The art style and design of the ships sure looks like Homeworld. But who knows.

That could just be because it's from the same studio, I'm sure we'll get more info on this in time though.
From another person: I tend to agree:
"I tell you what I think happened. Blackbird have an idea called homeworld shipbreakers, gearbox buy the homeworld ip, blackbird get commissioned to do a change of direction to a homeworld rts in order to make what gearbox think will be nore money and publish. It does ok but not great and gearbox will not back hw3. Blackbird get a kickstarter going for homeworld3 under gearbox but get a new publisher in general for all other games thry might do outside of homeworlds universe. Blackbird ressurect the shipbreakers idea outside of the homeworld universe as they so not own the ip. Blackbird now doing hard shipbreakers instead of the original idea which they may even still have old code for. Even the name is the same. It still looks like the same art style as well. Except the universe seems to be a lot more goofy and light hearted judging by the voices. Whoch does not really appeal to me at all. Neither does the cloning tech to give you lives. So probably just as well."

I got mixed feelings about it. ships seem to be straight out of homeworld but seems to take place in a different world with VR graphics and a change of tone and settings.

And I disagree with previous post, ignoring the terrible writing, the original game was called Hardware shipbreakers and was an RTS game from day 1 even before they acquired the license to the name Homeworld.
Blackbird has been working on 3 games since Deserts of karak and it was already on their website for years, they clearly mentioned a new RTS game which we now know is HW3 and a first person game which we also know is this new shipbreakers game.

The game they originally were working on that was called Shipbreakers became Deserts or Kharak. It was originally being made as a spiritual successor to Homeworld but Gearbox offered them a chance to actually set the game in the Homeworld universe so it got overhauled.

Whatever this is is unrelated to that project, though it's possible this originally started as an idea for a Homeworld spinoff.

That is Earth in the debut trailer, not Hiigara. So it's definitely not in HW universe.

This is separate from Homeworld.

It is a brand new IP totally unrelated to Homeworld.

It's probably just as well as I am much more interested in Homeworld3. This seems like a bit of a sideshow in a universe less serious and more cowboyish. Plus the laser cutter tool seems too tiny to do the crazy thing you can do to ships with it. It does not suspend my disbelief. I'd expect a huge breaker ship to do this work with massive power and crew requirements.
