No gender selection? WTF?
When I play an mmo or ANY game with character creation feature i expect there to be a reasonable amount of options, but not having a gender selection is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying. Why cant I decide what gender i play as for what class? as the player, why cant i make this decision?

A lot of older games as well as several newer Asian and anime-styled mmo's choose to go with Gender-Locked classes. Not exactly sure why, but it's just not an immersion factor for them. I mean you aren't missing much - it's not like any other aspect of character customization is very good here either.

Still an excellent game in my opinion. I can't wait to hit max level and start climbing the PvP ladder. Best of luck to you, mate.

Its gender locked for storyline reasons. This is most prominent in the tinkerer storyline, however, they give sufficient reasons throughout the game for all the other classes.

Warrior- Youre a great warriors son striving to prove yourself to your father who magically dissapeared on you.
Archer- elves are primarily female (born from the tree of life) always being ruled by an elf queen, not king. like 1/1000000 evles are born male though.
Cleric- The clergy is male only. Not suprising.
Sorceress- Females are born with a significant advantage over males when it comes to sensing/controlling magic. However, male sorcerers dont seem to be as rare as male elves. They are rejected by the astral coven because their previous leader was a male that betrayed them.
Tink- not gonna say for more spoiler purposes.

DN's character customization isnt amazing by all means, but, i do appreciate them working the gender lock into the game instead of always leaving it as "why not? are they just lazy?" which could be true, half the costumes
To expand a bit, for lulz or otherwise.
Archer: There is one male archer in the game (Archer Yuvenciel), as compared to all female archer trainers, other NPC, and PCs. Which is funny as it would mean one male could have a harem of straight archer females. Good times. One of the class options for archer is acrobat, the animations would be extremely awkward on a male.

Cleric: With the divine protection of the Orbital Space Church the clergy go forth spewing justice. But female cleric, possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hvgKyP1eBc

Sorceress: There are two male NPCs, one-spoiler. For the most part, while your job is a sorceress, the sorceress in game is a specific one, who is female. She has a gambling debt.

Kali: Like every class really, is a specific person.

Many games are now gender lock, I do not have a problem playing a character not of my own gender. What benefit is there to being my gender? It's aesthetics, AKA mods.

Yeah it's for story reasons. More like it's for less work reasons. So they don't have to make double the models and the like for each class.

Just the way it is. You'll have to deal with it.
It would be nice for them to add both types of models and modify the story for it, it would add even more variety to the charecters, but that would be a lot of work and time. It's not really a high priority at the moment so I would just ignore it.

I think its more common simply because they can put more personality into how a character fights or acts or even stands. If gender choice was an option, they'd have to make it sure it was normal enough that it would look good on any gender or type of character. So instead of "Generic Sword Character," you'd get someone with some flair. Just my thoughts on it
What would you prefer? A 4-7 month update to remake the same story, make new models of the same characters, find new voice actors, and somehow make the acrobat and academics male appropriate or new content, the new assassin class, nest, and new dungeons?

It wouldn't take nearly that long. They already have a story and they already have models, all they need to do is alter them. Which I would estimate a month or two. No where near 4-7 months. They could also use the same voice actors that played the other male and female charecters. This isn't as complicated as you think.

I didnt mean to start a debate, i just wanted to know the reason for no gender selection before i actually played the game, serioulsy you can stop now.

I'm just glad the classes who match my prefered play style are female locked, but at any rate, arc star with all those alterations required to put the gender select in retroactivley your looking at at least a years solid work, and a lot of money spent. and this is coming from someone who is studying for a bachelor in game design. oh yeah and as the op said discussion over, i just wanted to point out how wrong you were about time and effort.

there are a lot of reasons to gender lock. someone said story, mostly because of that. and because of class issues with the design of their game. also a lot of other mmo's have gender lock now

I agree. I was very disappointed when I discovered I couldn't choose my gender.
